Hi everyone,

I am planning on going to SU 2 years down the road, and I've been out of highschool for a year now.

I want to pick a good community college that will hopefully increase my chances of acceptance to SU.

Right now I'm in California but have the means to move elsewhere, I am debating on whether to stay in my local area and attend Foothill College and transfer from there to SU, or moving to NY and attending Onondaga Community College and trying to transfer to SU from that school instead...

I guess my question is, which school would provide a higher chance of acceptance to SU? I read that Onondaga has a direct transfer program with SU, however their transfer success rate is only 36% where as Foothill College is 68% according to collegemeasures.org

So now I'm at a crossroads, although Onondaga offers a transfer program with SU, their transfer success rate is making me wonder if I should just stay in my area, go to foothill, and transfer from there?

Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Definitely nice to hear you’re thinking about Syracuse University. I am a transfer student from neighboring town. I went to CC in my hometown for A.S. Degree and decided to transfer to SU for civil engineering. Regardless, one thing to keep in mind, is that SU uses a holistic approach when determining their admitted students. I recommend getting a solid GPA, at least a 3.3/4.0 will be good. (Mind you that SU offers a merit-based transfer scholarships, I think a 3.5-3.7 is required, double check with Admissions Office) My GPA at time of transfer was a 3.4, not amazing, but not bad either. Also, you are required to write admissions essays, here I leave that part to you. You have to let them know you bleed orange, basically!

In regards, to Onondaga Community College, do consider what you want to major in/study at SU. They do offer programs for transfer, and there are advisors and counselors ready to assist you in the process, let them know what you’re thinking about majoring in and they can point you in the right direction.

I guess what it comes down to is if you’re comfortable leaving home and starting you collegiate career in NYS. Also, would you prefer to stay home, work, save money living with family, and then come to SU. Either way, the CC you go to, should not be the deciding factor. As long as you can prove to SU that you’re academically capable, then you should be good.

Please, post any questions you have, and good luck!

Cuse has a lot of community colleges that a lot of students come from. A lot of them have partnerships with Syracuse. Here’s a link I found on their site:
