<p>What are each of the Claremont universities known for? Which is the best for a premed student?</p>
<p>Well, first as just a trivial matter, the Claremonts are technically colleges, not universities. </p>
<p>As far as premed, I can’t speak too much about it, but I know Pomona is pretty big with biology and neuroscience and the like, so I’d bet premed at Pomona is strong. Claremont McKenna is mostly Government/Economics/Business studies, so I don’t know how much they put into a premed program if they even have one. Harvey Mudd is mostly Science/Math, so again I don’t know that they would focus very strongly on premed either. Scripps and Pitzer I really don’t know well enough to make much of a comment on. But keep in mind, within the Claremonts you can cross-register in classes and for the most part you can even cross-major. My general impression is that Pomona would be strongest for premed, but if you were to go to, say, Pitzer (especially since Pitzer specifically is so open with their academic scheduling), you could take Pomona’s classes.</p>
<p>Sorry I’m not incredibly knowledgeable; I’m only an entering freshman myself. Hopefully this helped a bit though.</p>
<p>I’m going to be an entering freshman at CMC. Although Pomona has a fantastic pre-med, so does CMC. It shares it’s science department with Scripps, Pitzer and CMC. I was worried that going to a very govt/econ/IR focused school would be a downfall. At CMC, I’ll be one of few pre-med/science majors but the perk of it is that you get a lot more attention. The last few years (not sure how many) the placement of pre-med students to their top medical school choice has been 90%+ (I think 100% one year). Going to CMC will not inhibit your chances to go to med school, which is where I hope to be!</p>
<p>Also, the joint science program has a very unique course called AISS (accelerated integrated science sequence) that combines intro physics, chem, and biology in a two course, year long class. This is funded by a science organization (don’t remember which) and is the only kind of class of it’s kind. I hope to take part in this class this coming year! When I went to Inside CMC Day (admit day) the Joint Science Department asked top medical schools if this class plus other advanced science courses would be sufficient for their requirements and all of them (except one) thought it was a great idea or even thought the integration of the basic blocks of science was a fantastic tool to teach to future medical students.</p>
<p>Also, the beauty of the Claremont colleges is you can cross-enroll, major in something your college doesn’t have, etc. I’m VERY excited for this year! Going to a small, liberal arts school wasn’t on my radar…Ivy Leagues were where I wanted to be but the Claremont Colleges blew me away. </p>
<p>These are my impressions of each school (from what I’ve heard)
Harvey Mudd: hard science/engineering
Pomona: East Coast Liberal arts-type, broad range of strengths, learning for the sake of learning
CMC: Govt/Econ/International Relations, real world preparation, very strong internship program
Scripps: Women’s college, strong in many departments
Pitzer: social sciences</p>
<p>Definitely consider the Claremont Schools, they are FANTASTIC. I can’t wait for this fall!</p>

<p>Really, going to any of the Claremonts gives you great preparation for and opportunity in essentially any field out there, but I defer to the post above as far as premed specifically goes :)</p>
<p>Anyone know how their drama department is? I’m interested in a strong liberal arts educations, so I’m liking Pamona or Scripps, but I also want a strong theatre department with a lot of opportunities available.</p>

<p>In addition to the aforementioned characteristics, Claremont College sports teams provide another simiiarity. In Scooby Doo, mysteries are usually solved by splitting up the gang. Fred, Velma, and Daphne (CMS) usually work together, sending Scooby and Shaggy (P-P) off to stay out of their way. Ironically, Scooby and Shaggy, with great effortlessness, usually solve the mystery. This greatly resembles Claremont College sports in the fact that Pomona-Pitzer teams don’t really have to try very hard to beat CMS."</p>

<p>I’m a rising Junior at Scripps, so here’s my take on these questions:</p>
<p>Pre-Med: The acceptance rate for Pre-Med through Joint Science is roughly 86%, and Pre-Med tends to be a popular track for Scripps students.</p>
<p>Theater: Though the Theater department of the Claremont Colleges is located at Pomona, Scripps students are welcome to major in Theater. All the classes would be held down at Pomona. If you’re not looking to major, but would love to be involved, the Theater department is one of the most inclusive and welcoming departments on the campuses, inviting students from all the schools to audition for productions. There is also a popular 5-college Improv group, Without A Box. </p>
<p>As for The Scooby thing, I’d say Scripps is a Daphne-Velma hybrid.</p>
