I'm not sure whether I should take chem 3a over the summer of take bio 1b. If I take chem 3a over the summer, the course will go faster, but at least it'll be the only class i'm taking. if i take bio 1b over the summer, then I'd take chem 3a in the fall. What should i do?

Take Bio 1B in the summer, it is easier then. Take Chem 3A in the fall to give yourself more time to absorb the material. It's very different from general chemistry.

are you pre-med student? did you guys take chem1B?

I'm taking pre-med classes. I did not take Chem 1B.

tastybeef- so did you take chem1A/3A/3B and MCB102(biochemistry)?

As for me, I took all except MCB 102, I shall take that this fall.

blueemo- how was chem series? im currently taking chem1A but 3A,3B seems hard... and is MCB102 required for med/dent school?what about chem1B is it required? isn't MCB102 biochemistry?

"tastybeef- so did you take chem1A/3A/3B and MCB102(biochemistry)?"

I took 1A, 3A, and 3B just like BlueElmo. I'm taking MCB 102 or MCB C100A (depending on what major I choose to declare) in the Fall.

Chem 1B is not required. Yes, MCB 102 is biochemistry, but Berkeley has a different sequence from other schools.

Professional schools know Berkeley's chemistry series is different.
Chem 1A and Chem 3A are general chemistry
Chem 3B and MCB 102/MCB100 are organic chemistry

Chem 3 series are challenging, but they weren't bad. Like Tastybeef said, 3 series are very much different from chem 1a. O-Chem is pretty fascinating, though, especially 3A.

Question: for my profession school requires biochem so if i take MCB 102... it fulfills o-chemII/biochem?

Don't know. Why don't you go ask your academic advisorr?

Also, is chem112A/112B series acceptable as o-chem also?

Ok, for premed

You need: Math 16A-B or 1A-B, Chem 1A, 3A-B, Bio 1A-B, and Physics 7A-B or 8A-B.

You can take Bio 1B before Chem 3A. I am taking it concurrent with Chem 1A this semester.

Chem 1B is for engineers, however one can use it to get into Bio 1A (I think).

No MCB courses are required, nor is MCB the premed major; that is a myth purported solely by MCB students.

Chem 112A-B is the upperdivision version of Chem 3A-B required for Chem majors

so MCB 102 is option? so it's for only the school that requires biochem rite?
so chem1A,3A,3B that's 3courses.. and that fulfills 1yr gen chem and o-chem?(it's not 4courses)

"No MCB courses are required, nor is MCB the premed major; that is a myth purported solely by MCB students."

Right. MCB courses are not required. Anything can be a pre-med major. Not so sure about the myth.

"You need: Math 16A-B or 1A-B, Chem 1A, 3A-B, Bio 1A-B, and Physics 7A-B or 8A-B."

Wrong. You NEED to take MCB 102 for this combination of chemistry series. Chem 1A and 3A are classified as general chemistry, while Chem 3B and MCB 102 are classified as organic chemistry. So in this case, you NEED to take MCB 102 to satisfy the organic chemistry II requirement.

MCB courses are NOT required if you take the following chemistry sequence: Chem 1A, Chem 1B, Chem 112A, Chem 11B. Here, 1A and 1B count as general chemistry while 112A and 112B count as organic chemistry.

And Torrancecali, why are you worrying about this now? Your academic advisors are much more experienced and can explain this much better. Furthermore, transfer admissions have not even come out yet. Doesn't this feel like a waste of time to learn about Berkeley's odd chemistry sequence?

Take tastybeef's advice. Right now, you should just focus on Chem 1A and try to get an A in that class. Then take Chem 3A, then 3B, then finally end your chemistry sequence with MCB 102.
If you want to go pre-med, you would also want to taken an additional upper division bio class, such as MCB 150, 130, 136, etc. This is not required but my advisor told me that this is recommened for medical schools.
But like I said, just focus on the course you are taking right now and everything else will take care if itself.

Thanks everyone!!!

Realize that just because 75% of MCB students are premed that you should follow their lead into MCB.

There are a plenty of options available. Some of them will actually pertain more to think that you will learn in med school (ex. all the physiology classes in IB would exceedly useful. Undergraduate Majors CNR also has a good amount stuff that would also pertain directly towards human health)
