which classes to take?

this is a pretty dumb question, i guess, but since my phase two ends in like twenty hours and i still have no idea...

i'm an english major. so far the classes i'm taking are english 45c and intro to logic (philosophy#something). the standard reqs are covered with aps and stuff (i think?!), so i really don't have any idea what other classes to take. the calso counselor suggested i take classes i'm interested in, but there's nothing available right now that's really catching my eye. does anyone have any suggestions for classes that you thought were really interesting or helpful or whatever?

I have all the req's covered too with "aps and stuff". I decided to take two req's for my major and two of the breadth requirements (I already have two taken care of).

Are you signed up for english 45 ac? cuz if not American Cultures req' is another class to take care of.

Take a look at these too, they're "Discovery" courses:
<a href="http://lsdiscovery.berkeley.edu/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://lsdiscovery.berkeley.edu/index.html</a></p>

Good Luck :)

EEEEEEEEEP YOURE A LIFESAVER! I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THOSE DISCOVERY CLASSES! SORRY IM CAPSLOCKING BUT IM EXCITED TO SEE CLASSES IM EXCITED ABOUT THAT ARE STILL AVAILABLE AFTER SPENDING LIKE THREE HOURS TRYING TO DECIDE!

i heard so much goodness about physics for future presidents and i couldn't find that anywhere. and benevolence really sounds like what i want. AND THE GENERAL ASTRONOMY. !!!

do you know if there's a limit to how many discovery courses we can take?

I don't think so. :)

I'm taking Physics for Future Presidents, personally. I heard Astro 10 is excellent with Fillipienko.

I'm glad I could help! :D

I watched a class with Fillipienko or however one spells it. It was interesting. I am currently enrolled in physics for future presidents (i'm even in the same discussion section as geminihop:)!), shopping for courses and what not. The discovery courses don't mean anything beyond "stuff our office wants you to see fufills requirements." I don't think there is any limit, and i hope not, cause i want to take most of em :D

by limit i kinda meant in one semester though. i added benevolence and physics for future presidents and then things conflicted and i didnt' want to take benevolence and philosophy so i dropped philosophy and needed more units so then i signed up for the astronomy.

which means now i have english 45c and 3 discovery courses. i have spanish on waitlist and if i could get it i'd prob drop a discovery course or two but is my current schedule with 3 discovery courses okay?

I don't see why not, as long as the finals don't conflict and the times dont, either.

Yeah, sounds good to me :) If anything, Astro. and Phys. cover the same breadth req'. But they are both good classes as electives.

yes! haha i didn't realize they covered the same breadth req, but i don't mind at all because they both sound so interesting to me. thanks to everyone who posted here! hope to see you guys in physics... :)

Sorry, AP tests cant be used to satisfy the 7 course breadth requirements, so thats something you could work on. You can read more about that here: <a href="http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirements/lsreq.html#7breadth%5B/url%5D">http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirements/lsreq.html#7breadth</a></p>

And Im assuming you got a 5 on the English AP to test out of the R&C Req, and also tested out of the QR req.

For the English major, there are several lower division requirements. You still need 45A, 45B, and a Shakespeare class (17, 117A, 117B, 117J, or 117S).

It seems like these should be things you work on knocking out before you take whatever you want. But those Discovery Courses seem like a good idea, since they take care of some 7 course breadth requirements.

hey easymack--

yeah, i knew aps couldnt test me out of the breadths, which was why i was trying to find classes that would cover some of the breadths. but sinc emost of them cover something (and i'm starting with nothing so everything counts at this point), i was just trying to find something that interested me.

yeah, i tested out of those reqs.

from my understanding (or how the calso people explained it to me), i only need to take either 45a or 45b AND either 45c or shakespeare to declare english. since i'm trying to ease into first sem, i took 45c since i don't feel up to dealing with that 17th cent stuff quite yet. i was planning on taking 45b second sem, declare by the end of frosh year and then work on 45a and shakespeare (since they are required) the second year, since i was advised that it wouldn't be wise taking two english courses one sem (wayyyy too much reading). which is why i was back to taking whatever i wanted, kinda, (with the vaaague intention of getting those breadth reqs out of the way. i was going to take music of american culture for my ac, but decided no since it didn't actually interest me the way the discovery courses did) since there were no other reqs for me to work on. i feel like i sound *****y and i really don't mean to, i just want to make sure i have everything worked out correctly so far.

Of course AP units cannot satisfy breadth, neither, for that matter can IB units. I took 8 units (two 4-unit courses) at Harvard SSP last year. I have already talked to the counselors, the classes are transferable.

I've done my research, easymack, ;)

haha who knew cc censored. ehhh i'll just say crabby then.
