I'm in the process of choosing next semester classes and I was looking for a class that would be sort of laid back, and interesting. I don't want to take a class that will add to my stressful work load. I don't know whether college art and music intro classes are difficult or not.

You should keep in mind that I lack skill in either art or music lol. Just looking for a laid back class.

I took Art Appreciation, my brother took Music Appreciation. So I can only speak from my perspective, but I know my art class was pretty laid back (possibly due to a good instructor). We even had a night were we got a free grade for showing up to an art opening at the local museum (wine, local artists, and a free 100? Yes, Please! I would have went without the grade though). While we had to do a few projects, none of them required actual skill, they just tested knowledge of general concepts of art.

My brother’s music class has yet to impress him and it’s almost the end of the semester. Most of his grades have come from quizzes and multiple choice exams (which I guess is still pretty laid back). He admits he’s retained very little of what they’ve gone over and the class bores him.

All in all, it will come down to your own personal taste though. If you enjoy art (and in an appreciation or history course, learning about the artists), then you’ll obviously do better in the art course. If music is more your thing (and obviously, I don’t mean that you just listen to your iPod all day), then go for the music course. Intro courses rarely require any sort of skill, so that’s not important. Pick the one you’d rather know more about and don’t mind spending a few months of your life learning about.

If you don’t have any sort of music background, I’d go with Intro to Art. Learning to read music can be kind of tough, especially if you aren’t trying to learn an instrument or anything.

If you have some familiarity with reading music, then Intro to Music.

I took Art Appreciation this semester, and it was an absolute joke. Easiest A I ever made. Music would probably be more interesting/valuable, but if you just want to knock out your humanities requirement without doing any real work I’d go with art.
