Does anyone have any personal experience or information about which college is better for Computer Science: Iowa State or University of Iowa? I’m finding it hard to find anything that really differentiates between the two.
I can’t really help you any more on this than I did in your other thread. I did look them up in the US News CS rankings (which is more for grad schools than undergrad), and they were actually tied, at #63! That at least suggests that they’re at about the same level. The thing is, do you really need to determine this at this point? You can apply to both (and, I assume, several other schools), visit, gather information, and, if you end up needing to, decide later. If for some reason you can’t apply to both, you can try visiting them beforehand and see which you like better. If they are so close in quality of CS, you can use other factors to decide which one you prefer.
Other things you can do to analyze the departments is look at their web pages, check out how many faculty they have and what they’re doing, check out what courses they have (and how often they’re offered), etc.
Thanks, I am going to visit both in 2 weeks. I was just hoping to see if one was better or if they really are that close.
There are certain things you can try to find from online search.
-> Which department offers more electives than other?
-> Whether they offer degree from college of engineering or art and science, or both, and in case there is a difference, what do you prefer?
-> Class sizes, whether you might have classes taught by TAs?
-> You can also trying posting on red dit (removed the blank) for both schools and try and see what their current CS majors say about the school. In my experience, CS students tend to be quite active on red dit
Thank you, there is a lot of info on red dit
