Which college is better for the pre-medical track, UMass Amherst or WPI?

My top two decisions for college are now UMass Amherst and WPI but i don’t know which is better for me. My parents don’t want me going to UMass Amherst because they think it is too much of a party school and want me to stay close in Worcester but I know UMass Amherst has gotten their students into amazing medical schools and they have an amazing biology program. For me, I feel like WPI is too engineering based even though it does have a better reputation, they only have 30 students on their pre-medical track. I’m also thinking of double majoring in biochemistry and psychology. I’m really just wondering which choice would be the best since I want to end up in the surgical field.

I don’t know that you can miss at either University in respect to academic quality…

It is a well kept secret, but WPI has a Psychological Science major. A professor who recently returned from Washington, DC where she was a Congressional Fellow heads the Social Science and Policy Studies Department. Check out the department @ https://www.wpi.edu/academics/departments/social-science-policy-studies/faculty-staff

Seventy percent of the student body are still engineering majors, the remaining 30% receive a lot of attention from a very high quality, mentoring faculty. The WPI, IQP degree requirement must be completed by ALL the engineering majors enabling WPI to maintain a well developed Social Science and Policy Studies department to meet university wide needs. The non-engineering majors are still very comfortable with their math.

WPI also has a very well regarded and highly developed Biomedical Engineering major as well as the Biology/Life Science, and Bio-Chemistry majors. For pre-med process see https://www.wpi.edu/academics/undergraduate/pre-professional/pre-health. If you want to be in the surgical field, BME makes some sense

Successful Pre-Med and engineering majors do not have a lot of time to party at most Universities. You do want to plan activities which are a helpful break from studies.
