I was curious as to the public's opinion on each school. The University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina. Which one is more impressive in your opinion. Academics being the main criteria. Also, which is stronger in main, core disciplines like law, medicine, business, ect. Which one overall has the better name.

I see UofM as a better school, but UNC as harder to get into for OOS. I’d guess UofM has a better name.
UofM Law School is definitely better thought of, I dont know about the others.

In the Sunbelt, U North Carolina.

In the industrial Snowbelt, U Michigan.

Both are very good options for their IS students and, for some OOS students, fine options as well with peers of similar selectivity, eg, U Virginia/Emory/Vanderbilt for U North Carolina and U Wisconsin/U Illinois/NYU/ BC for U Michigan).

Michigan academically is more prestigious.

Taking these two institutions as wholes, Michigan.

Both are very highly regarded. Michigan will have a stronger reputation in the Midwest and UNC will have a stronger reputation in the Mid Atlantic (DC not-included)/Southeast. In much of the rest of the country (except for the South), Michigan will have more alums and therefore a greater presence. This will translate into a slightly better reputation for Michigan.

As for graduate professional programs such as Business, Law and Medicine, Michigan has the edge over UNC.

Hey…how did your visit go at UMich?

Have you gotten any idea of what kind of aid/merit you might get from UMich?

Are you in-state for UNC-CH? If so, then go there.

“UNC will have a stronger reputation in the Mid Atlantic (DC not-included)/Southeast”

Alexandre. The Mid-Atlantic states consists of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylania. I am certain Michigan has a stronger reputation in those states than UNC. UNC has fewer OOS students compared to Michigan. Michigan’s nationwide academic reputation is indeed stronger.

Academically, Michigan is in a league (or 2) above UNC’s. Almost all academic departments at Michigan are rated very highly, including the school’s 5 professional schools - Law, Medicine, Business, Engineering and Education. I can’t say the same thing for UNC.

UNC is harder to get into-in-state of out-of-state. Both are very prestigious. UNC is better at churning out Rhodes Scholars, while Michigan is better at turning out Engineers. UNC’s business school is better.

I guess it comes down to the specific program that you are interested in. For engineering, Michigan wins big. For business and communications, UNC is better. Everything else is pretty much a tossup.

Novi, to me, the mid-Atlantic ranges from Delware/Maryland to Virginia/North Carolina. I agree that in NY, NJ and PA, Michigan has a slightly stronger reputation than UNC.

Cuse, although UNC has produced more Rhodes Scholars than Michigan, neither one of those schools “churns” out Rhodes scholards. And I am not sure how you can say that UNC is better than Michigan for Business.

^^^^Nonsense again. Ross is equal or better than UNC for business. Rhodes scholars are so rare that they are not a good indication of anything other than a school that has specific offices that promote them. Michigan usually leads the nation in the awarding of Fulbrights, but I would hardly say that is the main reason for it’s prestige being greater than North Carolina. It’s just an overall better academic institution in most comparable departments between the two schools. Alexandre: Virgina and West Virginia are sometimes included in the Mid-Atlantic mix, but I’ve never hear of any other states that are considered this designation.

You’re right-both USNWR and Business Week have Michigan ranked slightly higher than UNC for undergraduate business.

In recent years, UNC has in fact been producing Rhodes Scholars in an impressive way; often times even producing two a year. While this may not be too unusual as far as Ivy League schools are concerned, I believe it is impressive for a state school.

I’d argue that Michigan enjoys a slightly better national reputation than UNC, but both schools are very prestigious state universities and you’re options won’t be limited by either of them.

U Mich in terms of international reputation

I see them as comparable undergraduate institutions.

I agree cuse, Michigan enjoys only a slight advantage over UNC where national reputation is concerned, but I’ll take it because UNC has an incredible reputation as it is.

Also, for NC residents, UNC is a no-brainer, unless the OOS option (even the allk-mighty Ivy League) gives a hefty scholarship.

Finally, if OOS to both Michigan and UNC, assuming finances are a concern, unless Michigan gives more FA/Merit Scholraship than UNC, UNC is a better deal.

“UNC is harder to get into-in-state of out-of-state.”

Of course it is. The school has over 10,000 fewer students, it’s percentage of OOS students is low, costs a lot less to attend. That doesn’t mean it it a more prestigious school and/or offers stronger departments.

No-it just means that it is a more selective school. Both schools are very prestigious and have strong course offerings in almost all areas, with the exception of engineering in UNC’s case. Michigan is slightly more prestigious nationally than UNC, but to claim that Michigan is some type of Princeton while UNC is more of a Villanova is ridiculous. Most knowledgeable people would consider both schools to be peers.

For the record, I’m a big fan of Michigan. If it wasn’t so cold (for me), far away and expensive (as an OOS student compared to UNC’s in-state tuition), I gladly would have applied there out of high school. But, I don’t feel like I’m at any sort of disadvantage because I chose to go to UNC.

“Michigan is slightly more prestigious nationally than UNC, but to claim that Michigan is some type of Princeton while UNC is more of a Villanova is ridiculous.”

No one made any such claim. Academically Michigan is stronger overall than UNC. The OP asked which school was academically more prestigious. I just answered what I felt was the truth.

P.A. of Michigan 4.4
P.A. of UNC 4.1
