Which schools do you think are equal/comparable in academic standing and carry a similar name when searching for a job?

Boston College, Tufts, Georgetown, Colgate, Vanderbilt, Bowdoin

^ HC Crusader, Is that a joke? None of the schools you listed besides Boston College are considered peers of Holy Cross. Holy Cross is an overpriced safety school for for those that could not get into an elite school.

^ HC has a strong image- and great networking that can’t be ignored.

^ And the schools he listed have far superior images and more impressive alumni networks. This forum has been assaulted by Holy Cross alumni these past few weeks and their actions are making the school seem VERY desperate.

So what? OP included job potential in the question. Networking and “alumni networks” are two different animals. Don’t make me say plenty of people would assume your school is just another statie.

Bucknell, Lehigh and Lafayette may fall into the HC range. I think Bucknell is better regarded overall academically and with an exceptional alumni network in the New York tri state area but HC is closer to them than to the Colgates, Tufts, Brown, etc.

Colgate, Boston College, Bucknell, Colby, William & Mary.

HC also has more Rhodes than Tufts, BC. CNBC just ranked Holy Cross as the 12th ranked school for highest mid-career salary amount(Colgate was 11) higher than most LAC’s including Bowdoin, Amherst, et. Also HC alumni contribute at over 55% placing it among the top 10-15 colleges and universities. With respect to alumni network, HC has 1 US Senator, 3-4 Congressmen, Obama’s chief speechwriter, 1 Supreme Court Justice( 2 other Justices have HC family ties, 1 Nobel Prize winner, and Chris Matthews among others.

Back to the subject…

*Which schools do you think are equal/comparable in academic standing and carry a similar name when searching for a job? *

We need more info.

What will your major and likely career be?

What area of the country do you want to work?

Is money no object? If not, how much will your family pay?

Major: Economics
I want to work in either New England or the Mid Atlantic Region
My parents will pay a New York State school tuition including room and board. So roughly around 20,000 per year.

^ So they are willing to pay $20K/year? How much will a ~$50K/year college expect them to pay, according to an online EFC estimator?

^^^

And, furthermore…since most schools don’t “meet need”…that’s another issue.

Not only might they have a higher EFC, but even if their EFC is $20k, that doesn’t mean that a school is going to give you $30k for the difference.

Frankly, often when parents budget a good amount…like $20k per year…their actual EFC is higher…sometimes much higher.

A rough estimate of your FAFSA EFC will be about 23-27% of your parents’ income. So, if their income (before taxes) is about $150k, then the EFC could be about $37k-40k per year. It will be higher if they have decent assets.

What are your stats?

GPA?

SAT? ACT? Include SAT breakdown.

$20k per year can be a good start if you can get the funding to pay the rest. That may require applying to schools with merit scholarships and/or, if your EFC is $20k, then applying to schools that meet need.

And, of course, CSS Profile schools may determine a different “family contribution” since they consider home equity and other things.

[Scholarships & Grants | Admissions | College of the Holy Cross](http://admissions.holycross.edu/financial-aid/scholarships-grants)

Read “Tuition Scholarships”, there is very little merit aid at Holy Cross, most of their financial aid is need-based.

*Frankly, often when parents budget a good amount…like $20k per year…their actual EFC is higher…sometimes much higher. *

Higher or lower depends on your real detail, as colleges view it- not what your parent’s think they can pay. OP, can we assume you’ve done your finaid homework? Not just looked at a college website, but run the estimators and read up via sites like finaid.org, to understand how income and assets count?

Understand the diff between some vague promises to “help you find a way to finance your education” (lol) versus generic fin aid vs “meets full need” commitments. And, definitely try to learn about the diff between the Fafsa and the way many colleges actually compute need via the CSS Profile. Good luck.

Boston University, Fordham, American, George Washington University, Northeastern University

*

Very true…that’s why I posted what I did. Many parents say that they can pay X…but their EFCs are 2X or 3X or more. The school doesn’t care that the family says it can only pay X.

Understand the diff between **some vague promises to “help you find a way to finance your education” (lol) ** versus generic fin aid vs “meets full need” commitments.

This is sooo true…virtually all schools say this. Even the super generous schools have misled families into thing that EVERYONE gets great aid…when in truth, those with high incomes and/or high assets often get little or nothing.

Colgate and Holy Cross are long-time rivals. HC is probably stronger in sciences with a strong pre-med programs and Colgate stronger in the humanities, Both schools receive about the same number of applicants.

Holy Cross is a mid-tier LAC. Equivalent schools:

Bates
Hamilton
Conn College
Lafayette
Franklin & Marshall
Kalamazoo
Denison
Lawrence
Occidental
Whitman

Larger school equivalents:

Villanova
Univeristy of Richmond
University of Santa Clara

It is not equivalent to BC or Georgetown, HC’s two Jesuit cousins. BC is a quarter click above; Georgetown a full click above. Bucknell and Colgate are also somewhat better schools academically than HC.

Among Catholic schools ND>Gtown>HC/BC>Villanova. Among Patriot League schools Colgate>HC/Bucknell>Lafayette.
