Which college should I choose if I'm majoring in Chemistry?

I found out I can either get a BA in chemistry from the College of Letters and Science or I can get a BS in chemistry from the College of Chemistry.

What's the difference?? Does choosing either one affect my chances of being accepted? thanks

It’s harder to get into BS Chemistry, simply because CoC is generally harder to get into than L&S.

The difference is that you do more liberal arts breadth courses for BA Chemistry, while you do more science-related courses for the BS.

I’ve heard switching into CoC is a relatively painless experience save Chem 4A/4B

If you are interested in chemistry, you should take Chem 4a no matter how hard it is.

If you’re majoring in chemistry, you should choose the College of Chemistry.

The difficulty of getting into the College of Chemistry is nothing compared to the difficulty of getting into the College of Engineering. Just sign up for the College of Chemistry.

Or get into L&S, take Chem 1A/1B/15, and then transfer to CoC - those three courses are equivalent to Chem 4A-B.

^ If you take Chem 1A/1B/15 then you won’t know anyone in the College of Chem, which will be more annoying than you would think. Therefore, I would suggest that even if you apply to Letters/Science and plan to switch to the CoC, you should still take Chem 4A-4B.

Is Chem 4A/4B really that hard?

I can only speak for 4A, but seriously, it’s not bad at all.

4B is supposedly a lot worse

4B is quite a bit easier than 4A (which wasn’t THAT bad). 4A is actually hard, 4B is just somewhat tedious; the material isn’t actually conceptually difficult. And the five-week project is actually kind of fun.

But to OP - it’s harder to get accepted into CoC than L&S (from what I’ve heard). However, if there’s any chance you might want to do BS Chem, then even if you applied to L&S, take Chem 4A. CoC is pretty small and it’s nice to know people around.
