Yes, I am pretty undecided right now… I have two weeks to decide and any feedback would be greatly welcomed!
My options are UCSC, UCR, SJSU ( got in undeclared), or Santa Clara University (I got into L&S but not CoE).
I have visited all campuses above and know a general sense of their programs.
Would someone recommend the best program and give his or her reasons why? Thanks.
Here is my general stream of thought… “Just for reference”
As I have heard, Santa Clara University is the best, but for the price… It’s way out of my budget and I did not get any aid. UCSC seems to have a stronger program and greater chance of opportunities in internships (70% of undergrads do research) However, UCR is building a new research building by Fall 2018 and I will probably get into the Honors program. (waiting for application back) SJSU is right in the middle of Silicon Valley with outstanding internship opportunities, but I do not feel the “university” atmosphere that I experienced at the other 3 universities.
Did you get admitted into the CS major at UCSC or UCR?
Note that SJSU CS may be difficult to get into: http://www.sjsu.edu/cs/practicalities/major-change/
SCU may also be difficult to change into the engineering division, where CS is: https://www.scu.edu/engineering/academic-programs/frequently-asked-questions/#U4 . Of course, if it is too expensive anyway, then no need to bother with it further.
Yes, I got into CS for UCR. UCSC has the system where you are admitted into the university and then need to maintain a 2.8/ pass 3 engineering classes to fully declare CS (This marks the last year they are using the “enroll all” system for CS applicants)
Since you’re not sure of being able to get into CS at SCU, I’d go with UCSC. Strong CS program, and the requirements for declaring CS aren’t too high.
UCSC or UCR Honors would be my pick - probably UCR Honors since you will get some perks there. If you don’t get Honors at UCR, UCSC because the CS program is very strong.
I wouldn’t bother with SJSU and SCU since you didn’t get into the major you wanted.
