Hi I didn’t get enough money from any of the schools that i wanted to go to so now I’m down to University of Maryland (honors college but its still very expensive and i haven’t visited), University of Vermont (honors college), or University of South Carolina. I don’t really know much about these schools so I would appreciate your input. I’m majoring in genetics/molecular biology. I wanted to go to georgia tech but i can’t afford it
Thanks
Are you planning on med school after undergrad? If so you should go to the cheapest place where you can get good grades.
What is your cost of attendance for each of these schools? What is your home state?
@collegebound250 - it looks like you are from NY. What is the net cost for each of these schools? Di you apply to any SUNY schools? Not factoring in you financial aid package, UVM will be the most expensive, followed by UMD and then South Carolina.
I am from NY but didn’t apply to SUNYs because I really didn’t like any of them. I will be applying for graduate school. South Carolina is the cheapest (they offered in state tuition) but I’m worried it isn’t a good enough school to get me into any good grad schools. UVM offered me 17K a yr making it 33K, and then UMD offered me next to nothing making the cost about 44K a yr except travel costs are low and I was offered admission to the Gemstone Honors Program.
I would try to visit all the schools before deciding.
Can your family pay those kinds of bills easily?
If not, take another good long look at the SUNYs. A gap year and a new application list could save you a bundle.
thanks but thats not an option
Med schools generally care most about your GPA and MCAT scores. Keep in mind that sometimes the less “famous/competitive” the school the easier it may be to get a higher GPA. Med school is incredibly expensive and it would probably be best to save on undergrad.
How much will south Carolina cost you? Did you get honors college? Do u want to go to grad school or MED school?
Why aren’t the SUNYs an option?
Why is paying $166,000 for under-grad an option? Is this truly affordable?
Have to agree… if you can’t pay, you can’t pay. You may not love the SUNYs, but if you didn’t have an affordable safety, you should have picked the best one for your situation.
i meant a gap yr. I just want to know which of these schools is the best for my major. The schools listed are the schools I can afford.
my affordable safeties is UofSC, UVM, and UMD as I said in the beginning of this thread. I just would like to know which one has the best program.
What was it about these 3 schools that attracted you to apply? Why did you like them? Trying to understand what you value in a college experience so feedback is appropriate.
Georgia Tech is $42,600 out-of-state, with a meal plan. If you couldn’t afford 42K, then UMD, at 44K, won’t be affordable.
I would choose South Carolina to save the money for med school.
It has been my experience that you don’t need to go to a fancy school for undergrad in order to get into a fancy grad school. You need to get a high gpa and you need to do well on whatever standardized test you need to take. If you do incredibly well at U of SC there is no reason why you can’t go to grad school at Harvard et al. While in college get involved, take on leadership roles and find good internships and get good grades, Prep for the GRE and you’ll be fine.
Are you interested in med school or grad school? I was giving you advice for grad school
