My daughter is in 11th grade. We are starting to think about which colleges to apply to. Here is her stats:
SAT: 1580 (math 800, R&W 780)
SAT MATH II: 800
SAT CHEM: 800
GPA: 4.5-4.6 (expected with the way she is going).
She is also in the Science and Math honor societies and a few science-related clubs.
She played in Junior Varsity Volleyball Team in 10th grade and didn’t make into the Varsity team.
She found her passion early: she really enjoy programming. We have decided on two safeties : two state colleges. We are debating which top schools she should apply to. She really liked MIT during visit, but we are not sure what chances she has. We are also thinking about Cornell and Carnegie Mellon. Advices are appreciated.

CMU and MIT have such a low admissions rate, that it wouldn’t really matter much. That’s not including the hideous tuition costs. You might as well apply to all of them and see what happens.
With computers, it won’t matter where she goes to school. It’s a job market based entirely on practical job experience and it’s ridiculously employable. After about 3 years of experience, employers don’t even ask where you go to school.
Be sure your safeties are truly safeties. Many of the state schools admit by major and the acceptance rates for CS are much lower than the overall university.
What kind of schools is your D interested in? CMU is in the middle of Pittsburgh. Cornell is in a rural setting in the middle of the Finger Lakes. What size school appeals to her? Cornell is much larger than CMU.
Be also aware that CMU and Cornell both still recommend SAT II subject tests.
Thank you. I will look into it.
Thanks. We will give all of them a try.
