Which college to make #1 - BU or Northeastern?

Hey everyone - I'm new to these forums and I hope you can help me out on this little dilemna.

I am entering my Senior year of high school and have my list of colleges (I'll post that in the appropriate forum). The only problem I have is that there are two colleges I really like, but am unsure which one to make my #1 desired school. These schools are Boston University and Northeastern University.

I want to be a sports play-by-play announcer one day, so my major will definately be in communications (like Broadcast Journalism, TV/Radio, etc). While I would want to know which school gives me a better opportunity through communications, I would also like to know which school creates a better environment, as in campus life, student life and things like that.

BU has their own school of Communications and this school appears to be very good. I have read that students can get jobs and internships through the communications school itself. Northeastern has communications as well, but it doesn't have it's own "school." However, at Northeastern, there is the Co-op program which gives you real life experience in your intended field while in school (a paying job $$). This program looks to be very good.

Right now, it does look pretty even in the aspect of "communications." I think the main deciding factor is where the better environment is (campus/student life, activities, etc.), as I briefly described before.

I have to make my decision on "Who's #1" in a month or so, so that I can gear myself a little more towards that school. BU ONLY has Early Decision and Northeastern ONLY has Early Action. While I will apply Early Action to Northeastern either way, this issue greatly affects my Early Decision to BU. If I like BU more, I apply Early Decision I in November. If not, I will go for Northeastern first (through Early Action) and if I don't get in, I will apply Early Decision II to BU in January (although my advisor tells me there isn't much of a boost in my value to hte school b/c it will look like BU is my "second choice.") or just apply regular decision if I do get into Northeastern.

Any help on this is appreciated.

Boston University has, in my opinion, the best communications school in New England. I don't even think Northeastern HAS a communications school. The facilities and opportunities through the broadcast journalism department at BU are top notch, and hard to beat. I'd say definitely go with BU ED.

I have 2 cousins that went to BU and one was involved in communications and psychology. She loved it and stayed for a masters. The other one was in business but wound up staying and settling in Boston. They both loved BU. I know 2 people at Northeastern and they love it too but I think BU has a better rep and you can intern and do stuff with broadcasting so dont worry about the "hands on" thing at BU.

Overall and in communications in particular, I would recommend BU.

one of my friends turned down Yale to attend BU/communications on scholarship specifically because she wanted to be a broadcast journalist... which she succeeded in becoming for a local FOX news outlet....

FOX? NNNNOOOOOOOO!!! Ok, MrMet_Jet, got for Northeastern. Anything but Fox!!! hehe

Alexandre,

Don't worry... it was a LOCAL FOX outlet... not the fascist FAUX News Channel... LOL

Ok, if you say it is not associated with the "fascist faux News channel" that we evidently know and hate, I am ok.

well, it IS affiliated... but just not AS fascist... LOL...
FAUX News Channel is the modern day definition of
propaganda... on par with Bagdad Bob... but we're drifting from the
OP's original focus of this thread...

Oh, yes, right, gotcha. Ok, BU over Northeastern, hands down.

hmm...Interesting. I'll take a harder look at both schools now (keeping what you said in mind) and eventually come up with a firm decision within a month.

Ah - I kinda forgot to told you all something that may hold a little bit of value. At Northeastern, I know the Sports Information Director (met him twice and we keep in touch) and would be involved in their department during my time there (if I went). While I would still strive to become a sports broadcaster, I may get an edge working with the Sports Information Department. It seems like I may get noticed quicker there, but I am not sure. I am currently trying to contact hte BU Sports Information Director as well just to show them what I've accomplished (I've done quite a bit regarding journalism and broadcast journalism).

Again though, I will heavily consider all factors and make a decision.

I re-read this entire thread just now, and by your views, BU appears to give me a better education in communications. I'll look this over in other sources as well (like books) when I make my #1 decision.

I am also curious about the campus/student life outside of the classroom. If any of you know, how is the campus/student life at each school? Also, I heard NU has better dorms (I am unsure for Freshman)...is there any information on that?

I appreciate the help. I just want to make sure I am not making any mistakes when I choose which school to make #1.

Yeah, Northeastern has the "best dorms in Boston." While BU's infamous Warren Towers are crowded and not exactly posh, the upperclassmen housing and off-campus housing in the area is superb. I would say BU has a better social life, only because the constant in-and-out of the interning Northeastern students makes it hard to have a cohesive student body.
