Which colleges are in the worst locations?

meaning bad neighborhoods, poor environment, etc.

I heard u chicago and yale were pretty bad.

You mean among top universities? The list would be too extensive otherwise.

USC----is in a horrible and dangerous part of Los Angeles. My niece was held up at knife point there last week.

what so dangerous about USC..or Uchicago..i know Uchicago is situated in chicago.thats so convenient

doesn’t have to be top universities

oh yeah USC was bad also i heard. what happened to your niece?

The University of Chicago is located in one of the more dangerous parts of Chicago. Same with USC, except it is in LA.

UC campus is VERY safe though, as almost everyone going there will probably tell you. Like any city location though, you need sense enough to not go on midnight tours in shady areas near the campus.

Yeah, I’ve been on UC campus and it’s not that bad.. Just don’t walk alone when the sun goes down and you’re fine.

The University of Chicago campus isn’t that bad, but if you don’t want to be in danger, stay on campus at all times (within a 3-block radius) and never go out at night. Go 4 blocks away from campus (in pretty much any direction pointing away from the city) and you’ll be in the ghetto. It’s pretty bad in my opinion, but I manage.

oh really, those two campuses are not safe ?
I don’t know how big Chicago is but I know it’s not safe at all. What if I did not stay in campus ???

You’d be much better staying ON campus than OFF campus. Considerably better. Unless you want to have a 30-minute commute each morning.

I dunno how UChicago area (I did visit during day) is at night, but my cab driver on NU visit sold me that all Indian/Paki drivers do not go to South Chicago at night.

Yeah, South Chicago (where UC is) is pretty bad…the campus itself is safe, but the surrounding area is dangerous.

I don’t care for the location of Clark/Holy Cross either.

Sure, Hyde Park itself is part of the shady Southside, but UC’s campus itself fine. In fact, from my visits I’ve actually found the dynamic around the campus and the opportunities for community engagement a valuable resource for UC students. I’m not sure what it would be like to actually go there as a full-time student, but I do travel down there on the weekends to volunteer at community medical centers, and it’s an experience you couldn’t get at the beautiful lakeshore campus at Northwestern.

At any rate, again I’d toss another vote for USC. Absolutely horrible. Penn, Columbia, Hopkins are all similar to UC, the bad part of their respective cities.

But I’d say the boonies are far worse campus environments compared to shady parts of a city. You couldn’t have payed me to apply to a school like Notre Dame, Cornell, Yale or Duke (to a lesser extent).

On the contrary, I think Harvard has the ideal location.

Among elite universities, the worst locations are, in my opinions:

Columbia University (bad part of town)
Duke University (Durham is really not pleasant and town/gown relations are not good)
University of Chicago (bad part of town)
Univeristy of Southern California (bad part of town)
University of Pennsylvania (bad part of town)
Yale University (same reason as Duke)

Even then, all of those schools have incredible campuses and cultures. They have the resources to make sure that on-campus security is excellent.

Being in the “boonies” is not necessarily a bad thing. Some students love being away from the city. Schools like Bowdoin, Cornell, Dartmouth, Grinnell and Williams are very appealing for people who like the outdoors and a small community.

I’ve never been to Notre Dame’s campus (which is apparently nice), but South Bend is a terrible city. I think it’s the only place I’ve been to that’s comparable to Detroit/Flint/Saginaw.

I would say Berkeley’s location is not so appealing

Morningside Heights is not a bad neighborhood in Manhattan, and I’d say Columbia Univ. is in a relatively safe area. Its on the Upper West Side btw. Broadway and Amsterdam Ave., which for those not familiar with the area is rather gentrified.

I always thought the USC is dangerous talk was overhyped. Then I took my first trip to USC (from UCLA) last February and realized that no, it’s not hyped up, it’s in a horrible place. South Cent LA is like nothing I’ve ever seen…

Illinois institute of Technology is located in bronzeville. Very rundown neighborhood.
