I heard Boston U is going down the toilet.
I also heard that Northeastern U is improving.

Colleges on the rise ---

Lehigh, Vanderbilt, Boston College, NYU, UC-San Diego, UCLA, Miami, UGA, Northeastern, Wake Forest, USC, Georgetown, University of Washington

UM and Northwestern

Schools on the rise:

NYU, Northeastern, American, USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, Boston College, UConn.

Bucknell, WashU

Hamburger University

Sember-- UMCP likes to make admissions standards higher but the quality of most of their schools remain the same. Their business program and their Jurnalism programs are the only really good programs they have. Also criminology but that is more a major. Their standards of admission are higher than most of other public schools in their bracket. OSU, PSU, and IU are all much easier to get into and all are as good if not better than UMCP. Maybe these admission standards will make it better in the future but schools being on the rise usually are making new buildings and new programs not just getting higher admission standards. The business program is pretty hard to get into with a 1360 but the school itself has an average of a 1260. I am sure all the LEP programs they have also have standards like Smith.

I think I heard they are building a new biology building that will be done soon. I might be wrong but i think it is 2 years. Maybe that is the only thing they are on the rise in.

NYU, Georgetown, USC, UCSD, Wash U.

Davidson, Bucknell, Holy Cross, and Colgate. Among universities, USC, UChicago, Duke, and Penn.

Highest increases in apps: JHU, CMU, Cornell

Northeastern and American come to mind.

One rule of thumb is to look at who's doing senior hiring. In economics, Columbia, NYU, Wash U, Duke, Caltech, have been throwing money around to get big names or hot youngsters. In general, the public schools have been suffering. Even the big name publics have either had to find special funds to pay their stars or find themselves suffer the death by a thousand cuts which hurts since econ is very popular now at the top 25 universities.

The gap between the pay at publics and privates is growing except for the top three or four publics ( I understand even UCLA is hurting) and there's a lot of grumbling about this at every conference I attend. There's also more screaming if there are large pay gaps in the same department in publics. Privates find this easier to do (hence keeping both "regular" faculty while cultivating superstars).

An interesting question is what will happen if the top privates (with endowments of greater than one billion) keep getting richer faster than the publics.

Case Western Reserve just exploded with research and new technology. It's definitely on the rise, I think.

In discussing the University of Maryland, Cheapseats noted,"Their business program and their Jurnalism programs are the only really good programs they have"

Response: You are incorrect. Maryland has very strong departments in their School of Business, School of Engineering ( which arguably may the the strongest of the schools) and their School of Communication, which has a lot more majors than Journalism. Maryland also has a top-notch program in education and especially in educational counseling.

I should note that although Maryland isn't noted for having a strong music or theater program, this may be changing. They have a new auditorium and are strengthening their program in these areas.

Frankly, the only think that I believe Maryland to be "weak" in are humanities subjects and in visual arts.

hey if you think so that is great. I think I am going there so the better it is the better it is for me. :D Their new auditorium is great by the way.

Just a quick question. What do you think about their biology program, more specifically to pre-med?

On the rise: Georgetown, UC Davis, USC, UChicago

Wisconsin has had strong increases in research funding (now #2) and hired excellent young faculty to replace the many coming to retirement age. It is well positioned in the right fields for the future. The facilities have been improved in the same important areas.
