I love that you did this and shared it with everyone- thanks

Except for a couple of west coasters and Floridians, everyone looks well to the east of the Mississippi. :frowning:
Texas needs to work harder.

While in NYC last month on a choir trip, D and I saw Anything Goes and Memphis. Among the more centrally located schools represented in the cast bios were:

Northwestern
Oklahoma City University
Webster
Michigan
Oklahoma
Baldwin-Wallace
Alabama State

Those who listed schools in their bios tended to be in the ensemble, not the leads, but still, it looks as if the eastern schools don’t have a lock on this.
(And I should maybe mention–there was one cast member who listed a BA in Biology!)

How to Succeed In Business…
Rose Hemingway - Catholic University of America

While it’s fun to read the bios in Broadway playbills, don’t let it be discouraging because of what schools are not represented. The reality is that very few of the thousands of kids who study theatre will EVER make it onto a Broadway stage. Inquire at the schools on your list as to where their grads are working and what type of work they’re doing. It’s important information to have but you can’t use Broadway as your sole metric or you will almost always be sorely disappointed.

Amen alwaysamom!

Agreed! Regional theatre and national tours produce a much more varied example of what schools have students working. :)

I did a quick survey of a couple of national tours and found grads/current students of the following:AMDA, Ball State, Belmont, BOCO, UC Irvine, Carnegie Mellon, Catholic University, University of Central Oklahoma, Circle in the Square, Coastal Carolina, Columbia (Art History/French major), Elon, Florida State, U Florida, Hartt School, Ithaca, Louisiana Lafayette, U Maine, NYU, UNC - Chapel Hill, Notre Dame de Namur, Pace, Penn State, Point Park, RSAMD, Shenandoah Conservatory, SUNY Cortland, Syracuse, UArts, Wichita State, Wright State.

I am sure a search of other tours would add even more. And once you add in the great regional theatres…

It’s also good to remember that many people who work on Broadway do so for a relatively short time. D has friends who have recently done Broadway stints that lasted for as little as 6 months! Broadway is a great line item on your resume, but that alone rarely makes a career.

If you scan Playbills a year from now, a different set of schools may be represented.

I’m guessing that most Universities/Conservatories post a list of alum who are currently/recently on Broadway.

Here’s what I notice about current NY/Broadway happenings from Northwestern, including Stephen Colbert in… Company! And did August Osage County close?

It might be fun to add current info from other schools!

for tours we can add Otterbein, UMich, USC, Marymount Manhattan, and U of Arizona (definitely west of the Mississippi.)

Austinmtmom is wise to point out the students from schools working in Regional theatres and national tours. It seems like some students look for schools based on which schools have students on Broadway, even when “making it” really only involves having a job! Great list austinmtmom! It’s so exciting that all those schools have grads working :)

I almost forgot that my D has a friend who graduated from Texas State who is currently on tour. She is a wonderful performer!

I can’t find last year list and when I get this year’s I will repost but the following is just 2008-2009:

I hope this doesn’t violate CC TOS. But here is a website that may be of interest,
OCUNY. OCU has a very large and active alumni group in NY they have a program every spring break where they invite up current MT students, let them stay with them, have classes, workshops, show them the ropes of Broadway, etc. On this website, there is a little video explaining the program and shows many OCU alum and what shows they are in.

Just came back from the national tour of Spamalot, which was really fun! I saw the original cast on B’way, and this was just as good. Here is a list of schools mentioned in the bios: Penn State, U-Oklahoma, AMDA, Wagner, Syracuse, Point Park, Boston Conservatory, Ball State, Elon, Circle in the Square, and one cast member was an English major at Rutgers.

Onstage- D went to high school with Sir Robin from the Spamalot nat. tour, and he graduated from NYU about 2 years ago. I don’t know which program he was in at NYU, but we saw him perform about 6 weeks ago and had great fun seeing the show again.

Yes, Martin Glyer, he was very good! He didn’t list NYU in his bio, so I didn’t know where he went to school.

Martin is a Tisch grad. My D knew him through a friend of a friend so I’m not sure which studio he was in but I don’t think it was CAP21. I recall her mentioning him to me because he was yet another Tischie who had double-majored while there.
