Which Colleges Do I Have A Shot At?

I'm having some difficulties selecting the college that i would i like to attend. I would really love to attend a "top" school but frankly my SAT scores and GPA dont meet up. I had an 1860(640CR+690M+530W) on my 1st attempt which i then bumped up(with some practice) to a 2000(650CR+750M+600W) and i did my highschool out of the united states but i am a Massachusetts resident (GPA roughly 3.5-4.0). Not only is my SAT score below average for most top schools but also my choice of major (Mechanical Engineering) is more selective than others and thus an even higher SAT score and GPA would be recommended if i wanted to attend a top school. So to cut a long story short. What are some good Engineering Schools that would likely accept someone with my academic credentials. I'm thinking of applying to Georgia Tech, would this be too much of a reach?. *Note: Total Cost should preferably be under 45k( Tuition and Boarding) and on campus housing would be nice.
Thanks in advance.

How about any of the following?

Andrews, MI
Boston, MA
Brown, RI
Bucknell, PA
Columbia, NY
Lafeyette College, PA
Smith College, MA
Stevens, MA

These all have ME and on campus housing for all 4 years should you want it.

^ Brown and Columbia would be big reaches with a 650 CR. What’s your unweighted GPA? “Roughly 3.5 - 4.0” is a pretty broad range. At Brown and the other Ivies, 90% or more of entering students ranked in the top 10% of their HS classes.

Smith is a small college for women only. Interested?

Purdue and the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) get top 10 rankings from USNWR for undergraduate mechanical engineering programs. Your stats seem to be in range unless the admission standards for ME are very much higher. Both are under $45K for OOS students. Can your family afford that without aid? OOS public schools generally don’t cover full need.

With a 750 math score, you will easily be qualified to take ME somewhere, the question is where? You’ll probably qualify or have a good shot at most of the Big 10 schools, including Wisconsin and Ohio State, all of which have known good engineering programs. There’s also Alabama, where you’ll likely have a great scholarship if you choose to do engineering there, though the cutoff score escapes me at the moment.

Use the College Search to find a lot more schools that offer ME with your scores and GPA.

45k over 4 years or 45k per year?

Following up the applying-to-Alabama-idea:
[Out-of-State Scholarships - Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama](http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out_of_state.html).

You actually JUST qualify for a presidential scholarship with a CR+Math of 1400 and GPA of 3.5+.
And since you’re planning to major in MechE, you get another $2500 per year, amounting to ANOTHER $10,000 over the course of 4 years. (Abdelhadi Hussein – College of Engineering | The University of Alabama)

U of Alabama is a decent school, I think you should apply there - especially since you’d get a lot of merit aid.

[College of Engineering and Natural Sciences - University of Tulsa](http://www.utulsa.edu/academics/colleges/college-of-engineering-and-natural-sciences.aspx)

Apply to UMass for sure to get in-state rate. Also, the SUNY schools in New York State are very reasonable even for people who live out of state – look into Stony Brook, Binghamton, Buffalo. Some private schools to research if you might qualify for aid could be Lehigh, Lafayette, Union, URochester, RIT, WPI.

Thank You guys for all the replies! Sorry for being a bit vague in my post. I’m a male, and 3.5-4.0 is actually just a guesstimate GPA since the school that I graduated from doesn’t use a GPA system but I was ranked 16/67. And I mean 45k/ year(tuition and boarding). Am I doomed to attend a low ranking college?

I suppose that depends on what you mean by “low ranking”, but many of what we’ve listed are just fine tor MechE. You aren’t going to qualify for any Ivies, but most of them aren’t exactly known for engineering anyway. If you’re willing to accept Top 25 colleges, especially those that produce a lot of engineers, you’ll do just fine.

Top 25 is More than good enough for me!!! R u serious???..Most of the people on these forums have such great stats and yet they’re so worried about getting into a decent University. I’m just a bit scared that I won’t get into a good College (if any college @ all)

An SAT of 2000 is Top 7%. An SAT Math of 750 is Top 3%. An SAT CR+M of 1400 is Top 4%. You’ll do just fine.

CC is not the real world.

Top 25 should refer to Top 25 Schools For Engineering. Though you still might make Top 25 National Universities.
