I applied for Fall transfer to Yale this year without really having decided that I wanted to study in the US. Yes that's right, only Yale. After being turned down following a rather lengthy waiting list proceeding, I've decided that I really do want to study in the US.

I'm an international student from the University of Auckland in New Zealand, with a college GPA of ~8.3 on a 1-9 scale studying Engineering Science, however if I were to transfer I would prefer to major in computer science or math. I also skipped the first year of my degree (time wise) but am catching up the course credits as I go, at the moment I have 3 semesters at 1.25 full time equivalent.

SAT grades were 680(W) 750(R) 720(M), no SATIIs.

It looks as if i'll be heading to the UK for the next couple of months to take up a research job at Imperial college and would hope to head to the US and resume studies in the spring.

Which (Good) colleges take spring transfers and have good financial aid policies (needs based)?

Cornell comes to mind. Check some threads for a list of top schools that accept spring transfers, then narrow the list down to those that give intl students aid.

Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences takes Spring transfers and has both, a Computer Science and a Mathematics major.

The downside to your situation is that most colleges (especially very competitive ones) don’t take very many Spring transfers due to availability.

Thanks. Also do you know how ivies react to taking time off formal study in transfer situations. I would still be working in academia but don’t know how its seen by admissions

As long as you’re being productive and gaining from it (and you explain it) it should be fine. Life experience is always a good thing, even if it’s not an education in school.

Thanks stryke. I’ll definitely need financial aid (i can probably push to pay ~15000US a year) but would not do it for a crap school, and apparently cornell only offers a small minority of international applicants fin aid. Damn I really wished I had put more effort into the Yale app. Anyway are there any others that have better aid policies for internationals? Yale and Harvard I know but neither of them are taking spring transfers, Stanford only domestics and the same for MIT. ARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH, my life. Damn Yale
