I'd like to know if any non-Ivy League public univ.s like GaTech, CalTech, U Mich AA, UIUC, Purdue, etc. give FA to international students(India) at all.

I would come under the category of need based FA; I do need about 50-70% funding. This is of course, considering that I somehow manage to get an admit....

And what about Columbia, UPenn, Princeton, etc..? Do they give need based aid? One of my seniors got a 100% funding from Princeton: is that a rare case or common enough?

I'd say I have a very good profile, just waiting for the June 5th SAT results.....

Are there any other good Univs which give a lot of FA, especially to International Students?

Yup they give. You can check out their merit aids. Princeton has a NEED BLIND aid policy even for internationals.
Columbia-- It will give need based aid but your application must be very strong because all internationals don’t get it. Very few gets it.
UPenn: I’m not sure.

GATech: Yes they give it but not enough to cover 50-70%.

CalTech: Yes, if you get admitted they meet your need.

Purdue: About $13000/year.
U mIch: not sure.

GT - doubtful. Undergraduate students:
International students are not eligible for federal or state financial aid programs. Georgia Tech offers guidance to international undergraduate students who experience financial constraints. Please contact OIE for more information.
Sounds like they direct int’l students to loans.

Always check each school’s website for it’s int’l policies. Few publics give aid and scholarships to int’l students.

^^ Oops, I thought that he was talking of ALL sorts of Aid. BTW I mentioned in the second line that I was talking of merit scholarships also. My mistake though.

And OP this is the person who can help you with your prob. I’m still naive. :)

Okay, can some1 explain me the diff between merit and need based FA, as in, can I get merit FA before going there?

Thanks PhoenixR and mom2collegekids…

What abt CalTech, Princeton, UNC CH, Rensselaer? And what about Columbia, UPenn, Princeton, etc…? Do they give need based aid? One of my seniors got a 100% funding from Princeton: is that a rare case or common enough?

Okay, can some1 explain me the diff between merit and need based FA, as in, can I get merit FA before going there?

Merit aid is based on scores. Often you’re told about merit scholarships when you’re accepted.

Some schools post on their websites automatic scholarships. So, for those, you’ll know if you’re assured a scholarship for stats.

FA is tricky. That is based on determined need and most schools don’t meet need. The school determines the need, so that can often be a surprise for families when a school thinks you can pay more than you can. Only certain schools give FA to int’ls because most schools rely on fed/state aid and int’ls aren’t eligible for that.

The ivies give 100% of determined need for int’ls who are accepted…however, that doesn’t mean that you’ll get a full ride. If the school thinks your parents can pay and/or they have a hard time verifying income/assets, you won’t get much.

As for the other schools, you need to look up each website.

In general, publics do not give FA to int’ls.

For the record…virtually ALL schools give need based aid. The thing is that some do not do so for international students…at all. You need to check each school’s website to determine if they do or don’t give aid to international students.

Schools like the Ivies do give need based aid to international students. The trick is getting accepted because not ALL Ivies are need blind for admissions for international students. This info is on each website. The Ivies do not give merit aid at all…only need based aid.

Most public universities do not give need based aid to international students…again…look on the school websites.

Re: Schools that meet full need AND are need blind for international students are HIGHLY competitive for admissions, with less than 10% of applicants being accepted.

As noted above, it’s not what YOU think you can pay…it’s what the schools determine your family CAN pay.

Thanks a lot. This has really helped me a lot. :)

Okay, just one final clarification: The Ivies do give aid if they judge you need it right, so if you get in, and need aid, they’ll probably give it to you. Right?

“Re: Schools that meet full need AND are need blind for international students are HIGHLY competitive for admissions, with less than 10% of applicants being accepted.”

thumper1 and mom2collegekids, can you give me a short list of good public/private Univ.s which do give need based FA to Int’l students? Even if they are competitive as I have a pretty good application. I will search for such Univ.s, but just as a reference
to help me.
