Just starting the search for and would love to hear from current parents of seniors. Daughter looking for MT programs and we know that without a true merit based talent scholarship her college dreams will most likely not be coming true. Our residency is in CA. Thanks in advance.

Alabama does.

Auditions and “scholarship day” are in January.

Have you asked this in the Musical Theatre sub-forum? Go to the main page where all if the forums are listed, and scroll down. You will find it inside the larger College Majors forum.

And as the mom of a theatre tech/design major I would be remiss if I didn’t encourage your child to take advantage if every opportunity to master some tech/design skills. Happykid and her pals were turning down paid stagehand work that didn’t fit their schedules in their second year of college. Their performance major friends are working at Trader Joe’s or as babysitters. The wider, and deeper, your daughter’s skill set, the greater the opportunities that she can take advantage of.

Wishing you all best as your family begins this process!

Agree with Happymomof1 to check out the Musical Theatre sub-forum.

Are you looking for merit (academic) scholarships, talent scholarships, schools that will allow students to stack both together?

How much can your family afford to contribute to your Ds education?

Generally speaking, academic merit scholarships are larger than talent based scholarships at schools.

If your D has high academic stats she may be able to obtain guaranteed (or competitive) merit money at schools with strong programs.

There are schools that will offer scholarship aid for incoming students. Some of the private schools offer enough to make the COA comparable with OOS (or sometimes IS public) COA. Sometimes this is talent based, sometimes academic merit based, sometimes a combination of both. However, a scholarship that makes a private university cost $30,000 instead of $60,000, or an OOS or IS public cost $20,000 instead of $35,000 is ultimately not helpful if that is out of your families price range. There are not a lot of full ride or full tuition scholarships out there. But, there may be some that exist.

Off the top of my head… schools I have heard people discuss receiving some sort of helpful merit awards (either talent, merit, or a combination) include…

Rider University, NJ
Wagner University, NY
Pace University, NY
Muhlenberg, PA
James Madison,VA
CCM, OH
Illinois Wesleyan, IL
Shenandoah, VA
University of the Arts, PA
University of Alabama, AL

I am sure there are others as well… these are just the ones I can think of of the top of my head.

What year in school is your D? If she is a senior, some of the priority application deadlines for the largest awards will have already passed for 2013 admission.

Do check out the MT sub-forum. Lots of helpful information over there!

PS. In reference to happymomof1s suggestion for D to develop other theatre skills outside of performing… Although there are many performance majors who do get paid to work as performers in the summer, it is always good idea to develop a wide range of skills in the field. It will make her a more well rounded theatre artist, and does open up the possibility to work in various areas of the field. Do check out the MT (and Theatre sub forums. Lots of terrific information!

Thank you.

Thank you. I will look for the sub forum as well.

^^

Kat…do you know why Alabama isn’t included on the list of schools with MT? I know that a number of College Confidential students apply/audition for the program.

Do you mean the list of schools on the top of the page? Those are not intended to indicate that those are the only schools with programs in MT, simply an organizational tool for schools that have multiple threads and topics on CC.

Here is a list of all schools offering MT: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/801037-big-list-mt-colleges-12.html … post #168 is the most recent update.

here is another list organized by program type:http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1335445-big-list-mt-colleges-program-type-4.html… post #54 is the most recent update.

It is important to check of the schools in which you are interested, because things change from year to year in terms of auditioned/ non-auditioned… etc…

Agree with other posters that academic merit awards tend to be much more generous than talent merit awards. What schools/types of schools are on your d’s list? Does she want to audition for the very, very competitive (for admissions and scholarship) programs, or is she willing to cast a wider net? D received talent merit offers with artistic acceptances to Point Park (Pittsburgh), Otterbein (OH), Ball State (Indiana), and academic merit offers from the above and additional schools. As far as scholarship thoughts, check if the schools have competitive academic scholarships – d was able to compete and be offered several generous offers based on these.

learnin…

Is your D a junior or senior? If she’s a senior, it may be kind of late to be looking for money (either merit or talent) since academic merit scholarships often have an early app deadline, and talent scholarships often have auditions that may be very soon.
