Which colleges have the "safest" campuses and surrounding cities?

Which colleges have low rape and mugging percentages? I know that JHU's surrounding city is pretty bad. How bad are the top universities such as Brown and Duke, etc.?

I know that there are no perfect and 'safe' campuses but I'm looking for at least one with a low rate.

(I gotta know when to bring my mace out.) :)

UC Irvine. Irvine may be the safest city in the country.

Williams. You can't get much safer than Williamstown.

New Hampshire is the safest state in the USA. Hanover is the safest city in NH, You do the math :)

If you're worried about rape incidents, it is sad to say, but your fellow students are much more likely to be the perpetrator than a random stranger. It happens everywhere, not just "urban" campuses like Chicago and JHU.

Incidentally, urban campuses tend to be 'safer' because the school ups security.

Columbia, for example, has WAY fewer crime incidents (break ins, assaults, etc.) per year and per capita than Harvard.

Check out this website - it provides a lot of information about campus security, including a link to a national database of crime statistics per campus.

Personally, I am happy my daughter is attending college in Northfield, MN. No big crime there since Jesse James tried to come through and was defeated.

Yep....I agree with SES. No campus is totally one hundred percent safe...and your fellow students are more often guilty of perforing your computer than some outsider...and more often guilty of date rape than some pervert climbing through your window.

Always go in pairs at a minimum. Watch the alcohol consumption because that is where the problems start.

Wake Forest had almost twice as many burglaries as Fordham in New York City. What is that? Kids stealing ipods and computers mostly. The vast majority of schools face the same kind of stats....VERY VERY few cases of rape and assault, and of those handful of cases almost ALL of them are alcohol and date rape related. The vast majority of cases involve stealing someone's gadget. Even in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, LA, or Baltimore.

momrath- I was going to say Williams but then I remembered Sewanee!

Probably Virginia Tech, at least for the coming year.

Ahem... except for the heroin ring involving the over-privileged local high school students, which has been a big controversy this summer (partially b/c the police chief is an idiot):

My mom is a Northfield native, so we still get the local newspaper :-) But, yeah, overall it is a remarkably safe, bucolic town.

usc is super safe... close to crenshaw blvd. :)

On the IPEDS COOL website
http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cool/

you can get on-campus and off-campus crime statistics

click on "campus security"
then click on either "criminal offenses", "hate offenses:, or "arrests"

data is broken down by on-campus/off-campus and by type of offense
