I'm applying to college this November but I'm unsure which ones I could realistically get into. I live in California and would prefer to attend a UC.

My UC GPA is 3.4 (unweighted) and my weighted GPA for Sophomore and junior year is 3.7.
My SAT scores are:
Reading- 610
Math- 590
Writing- 630 (with an 8 on the essay)
I will be retaking the SAT in October.

I lack substantial EC's but I have been an active member in the California Scholarship Federation since Freshman year and the National Honor Society since Sophomore year. I am also a part of the JV Cross Country Team (might be varsity this year) and the JV Track and Field team.

Which kinds of colleges should I apply to? I will probably apply to about 6, but I don't want to apply to any that I have absolutely no chance of being accepted.

OP, do the research yourself and get back to us. Start with the SuperMatch button in the column to the left. Type in your data and play with the preferences. See what pops up. Then go to CollegeData and see how your SAT scores match with some of the schools you’ve pinned. Then go to the net price calculators at each school you pinned and type in your parents’ financial info. Take the Expected Family Income figures to your parents and show them how much schools will expect them to pay and ask them how much they are capable of paying. Then you’ll have some of the parameters to form a list. Then get back to us.

The UC’s are very competitive and other than UC Riverside/Merced and Santa Cruz, the average UC GPA was around 4.0 or higher. What is your intended major? Your SAT score is not bad for those UC’s but GPA is weighted more heavily than test scores. How many AP classes have you taken? You should consider some Cal States such as SDSU/CSULB/CSU Fullerton/CPP depending upon your major. There are also privates such as University of Pacific, Whittier, Santa Clara, University of San Diego etc… in California. You could also look at WUE (Western Undergrad Exchange) which gives reduced tuition for California Students that attend any of the colleges in the exchange such as Oregon/Washington/Nevada/Arizona. Many OOS WUE schools cost about the same as in-state California schools. #1 most important factor in finding a school is how much can you and your parents afford.
