One thing I learned on CC is that sometimes a student gets accepted to a school but not the program they apply to. That has been extremely helpful to know, and it has made us into careful readers when opening correspondence from schools my daughter is interested in. So I thought it might be helpful for next year's audition crew if we list some of the schools and note if they are 2-part acceptances or 1-part with other options (for lack of a better term).

For instance, I know that Pace sends out academic acceptances whenever that decision has been made (often months before the MT decision is made), and they are somewhat aggressive in encouraging students to consider their school whether or not they get into the MT program. They send a lot of mail and make lots of phone calls once the academic acceptance comes, which can be unnerving when waiting for an MT yes.

Penn State's decisions came all at once -- for D it was a no to MT, but they encouraged her to call them to find a new major.

Balwin Wallace's "no" to their Bachelor of Music came with an academic yes to explore a different major, and they have a non-audition BA in theatre arts, so that's possibly more enticing to some people than a similar academic yes from other schools.

Two that I'm curious about are NYU and CMU. Can you get academically accepted to NYU or Carnegie Mellon if they say no to MT/Acting? Do they offer that option or assume you are only interested in a yes or no in the MT/Acting field?

My D was accepted academically to Wright, Webster, Coastal, Point Park separately from acceptance notice for their MT program. ONU and Rider were our only two thus far that came together. Rider was a decline for program but acceptance academically asking her to apply to another major.

I asked an admissions rep at CMU if my S could indicate a second choice major and she said he could. He didn’t, as it turned out, because he thought it would be too painful to be there for anything besides theater, but apparently it’s possible. Good school too.

@Jkellynh17 Thanks - I think I get it, but to clarify: At CMU, if you only listed Musical Theatre and/or Acting as your major of choice and left the second choice blank on the application, and you were rejected from MT/Acting auditions, you would be rejected from the school entirely. Does that sound accurate?

Yes, academic and artistic acceptances are one decision at CMU if you are applying for MT or acting. This would have been “business” or “English” or something like that, where the decision would be entirely based on academics.

Texas State. D didn’t pass the prescreen, but they make you apply to the school at the same time you submit prescreen. So she’s been accepted to Texas State academically, but never even got to audition :(

There are also schools that the decision comes together, but you do have the option to say you’d be open to consideration for an alternate major. Emerson, U No Colorado, U Miami come to mind off of the top of my head. Actually I think now you can do that at NYU too though that didn’t used to be the case.

Gosh I think I have had more posts in a single day today than I ever had in my CC life. I clearly need something else to do. But it’s a bit like watching the odometer before it hits 100K. I’m closing in on 1000 posts. My plan is to get to 999 and then never post again. It’s like preserving my youth forever.

Ode to 914: to all of those of you who liked the above post. I’m taking that as liking the idea of my stopping at 999. I’m good with it and probably more sick of me than you are. :)

I know NYU decision is coming April 1. Does anyone know when carnegies decisions are coming? My D was accepted to rider. Still waiting on pace though.

@halflokum - fuggeddahbout it, you’re a postaholic. Now we’re all going to watch your ticker and throw virtual confetti when the big event happens. Don’t let us down…
