Which Colleges Offer the Most Merit Aid??

I'm new to CC. Seems I saw someone in another post here mention that there were some great posts on this subject in the archived section of CC for 2004. Where can I find this archived section?
Our ds (junior) has a strong record so far: 1430 SAT, 4.7 Weighted GPA, lots of APs, ECs, soccer, church, etc. He is most likely not Ivy competitive, but we think very competitive at the second tier level. Our EFC (from an online calculator) will be around 25K, so we don't expect much in need based aid. Therefore, we are looking at the schools that are most generous with their merit aid. Our son likes the math and sciences. We are looking at the State honors program at Clemson. Open to any and all other suggestions. Thanks.

Lafayette College is an example of a LAC that is generous with aid and scholarships.

Using the search function on "merit aid" gave me over 200 hits. Going blind reading all of them. I'll keep looking!

Try searching just in the Parents Forum, subject: Best Merit Awards from Where, in the archives.

Case Western and the University of Miami are nice schools that give mucho merit money. Why do you say that your son isn't Ivy-competitive? Maybe he's not HYP competitive, but people like him get admitted all the time to the other 5...

Emory, Vanderbilt, Tulane, Johns Hopkins, Miami, and UNC might fit the bill. Is he looking for a large university or a liberal arts school? Does he want to stay reasonably near home, or is he looking to try a different part of the country?

Rice is quite generous. Try this search....

What type of school is he looking for? Large, small, medium sized? Any particular part of the country? Would he care about a religiously-affiliated school? The more information you can give us about what he wants, the better we can make suggestions.

Wow! You guys are fantastic. Thanks for the great responses. Our s prefers a smaller school, but one large enough to have all the major sports teams. He wants the "college experience". I don't think he has decided yet on the type of school, LAC or pre-professional. I also know he would have no problem going to school away from home, though West Coast might be too far given we live on the East Coast (SC). He is also mildly interested in ROTC and the service academies. He got accepted to USNA, USAFA and USMA summer programs and says he wants to go to one of them to "try it out."

baylor is medium sized, big league sports though their teams are not so very strong!
they offer up front merit aid based on test scores & rank
they are baptist based- which can be good or bad, depending on your family perspective!

He might also take a look at Trinity University in San Antonio. They are extremely generous with merit money and are relatively low cost to begin with. They have a lot of school spirit there and support for the school teams. Size is around 2500 students. Beautiful campus, very good academics, welcoming student body.

This link shows all the schools that offer National Merit free rides <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/l_j/secondhome/National_Merit.html%5B/url%5D">http://homepage.mac.com/l_j/secondhome/National_Merit.html</a>
Hope it helps.
