I am applying for quite a hefty amount of financial aid and my current list of colleges are:
Colorado College, Bates College, Bard College, Colgate University, Bowdoin, Occidental and the University of Rochester. I am worried that most of these schools are really competitive and some of them are reach schools for me. Please let me know how I stack up against these colleges and suggest some new colleges.

Ok…you’re an int’l.

Do you know what the FA policies are at these schools for int’ls? Do they give little aid or do they give BIG aid?

Are they “need aware” - are they less likely to admit you if you need a lot of aid?

What is your major?

I think you need to apply to a couple of financial safety schools that will give you big merit for your stats.

Keep in mind that for need-based aid, you must demonstrate need. They are going to look at all your family income and assets.

Not noting in big letters that you’re an international applicant would make the thread useless. These schools are all need bli d for Americans and need aware for internationals.

Who knows if they’ll give you aid. Unfortunately, There’s very little aid earmarked for internationals and it will come down to if they want a student from Nepal and if you’re the best candidate they have from Napal.

Among the 25 listed at the above url, consider Dickinson and Skidmore. They are a bit less selective than the ones on your own current list. Their deadlines may occur later than the decision on any ED/EA applications you completed (in which case, you could wait.)

Keep in mind that you have to QUALIFY for aid. If the schools determine that your family can afford to pay more, you’re not going to get much in aid.

@ mom2collegekids- I filled out the CSS profile, and the financial aid calculator (institutional methodology) estimated that my parents must contribute about $5000… so that is how much we will be able to afford ( 6000 tops)… I am thinking of majoring in Economics and most of these schools are NOT need blind for internationals which of course makes it less likely for me to get admitted… based on this information can you please suggest some schools for me?? Could you also stack me up against the ones I am already applying to?

@ 2college2college- yes it is very unfortunate that there isn’t much aid earmarked for internationals… I really hope I get it though… can you please suggest some schools where I will be likely to grab some aid?

@ tk21769- thank you for suggesting these colleges… what do you think about Occidental, Bard and the University of Rochester?

sidthekid - Bard offers a full tuition scholarship for Economics students called the Levy Scholarship. I know they offer it to international as well as domestic applicants. It would still leave you with room and board to pay, however, to meet with either financial aid or loans of your own. If you’re interested in that scholarship you need to apply for it directly (I believe it requires an essay.) There was a CC poster last year luluzg from Croatia who got the scholarship and is now at Bard. I know she needed additional aid, as well. You could send her a PM.

There are quite a few Nepalese students at Bard. The current freshman class is 16% international. You should contact their international student department and talk to them directly about how much aid is available for internationals.

You say it is unfortunate that not a lot of aid is earmarked for internationals. Is it common in Nepal for international students to get aid if they want to study there?

@ SpiritManager- Thanks for letting me know about the Levy scholarship. Though I had Bard on my list, I hadn’t really checked the school out before. Now that I have, I’m starting to like it( especially the scholarship part)… haha… Can you please tell me how I am supposed to apply for the scholarship? I couldn’t find anything on the Bard website or luluzg’s posts about applying for this scholarship. The only thing I found was a brief description of the scholarship.

The Levy Economics Institute Scholarship is a discretionary scholarship awarded to academically outstanding high school seniors who show a keen interest in pursuing the study of economics. There is no specific application form for this scholarship but students who wish to be considered for a Levy Scholarship should clearly state their area of interest in their application to Bard. Potential Levy scholars can use their application essay to address an issue in economics that they have studied or that is of particular concern to them.

And on the financial aid page for scholarship info:

Levy Economics Scholarship

Each year several full-tuition, four-year scholarships are available to academically outstanding high school seniors committed to majoring in economics during their undergraduate studies. Additional financial aid to assist in covering remaining costs, such as room and board, may be applied for and will be awarded on the basis of need. Additional assistance will take the form of a loan or campus employment.

A student receiving a Levy Economics Scholarship must major in economics, maintain a B+(3.3) grade average, and earn at least 32 credits per year.

Thanks SpiritManager. That reply was QUICK. I wonder how I did not come across that little piece of information in the international admissions page… So do I write the essay on economics in place of the Bard Supplement? That seems to be the only “application essay” that I can use to address an issue in Economics.
