I am an international student currently studying in India (CBSE board)
SAT score : 1950
SAT 2 (Maths) : 760
SAT 2(Chemistry) : 700
Grade X : 7.6 cgpa
Grade XI : 70%
Grade XII : 85% (Projected score)
I took Physics,Chemistry,Maths in XIth. My school has a strict system and that is why I have a low cgpa in 10th (Though I still ranked in top 20 of batch out of 100).
In XIth rank I topped in Maths and Computer science. But overall I’m in top 10 of the class.
I know that 70% seems low, but according to our school standards it is quite good.
My teachers have projected an 85% in my 12th board exams.
ECs :
Microsoft Student Ambassador
President of school computer club
Created school’s website (Accredited by the British Council)
Interned as a programmer in a startup
Created school’s app
Regular community service since past 3 years
Won the innovator award in my school
Created various apps for ios
Participated in Google Code-in
Won various inter-school competitions
I’m very worried that my 7.6cgpa in 10th will ruin my chances everywhere.Though I got 80%+ in Maths and Science in Xth
Also, I know a 70% in 11th doesn’t look good but my school counsellor is ready to write about the rigorous grading in our school.
I want to apply for computer science.
Which colleges in USA and Canada do I have a shot at?
The colleges I would love to get accepted in are : University of Illinois, University of California San Diego, University of California Riverside, University of Toronto, Mcgill , Waterloo.
What can you afford? If you are looking for a lot of financial aid, many of these schools are not options.
I do not require financial aid.
University of Illinois (at Urbana-Champaign, I presume) and Waterloo are out of your league, given your statistics. I can’t speak to the other schools you mention.
What about these schools:
University of Maryland – College Park
University of Maryland – Baltimore County
Rutgers
SUNY – Stony Brook
University of Massachusetts – Amherst
UC Santa Cruz, San Jose State, Stevens Institute, Syracuse, Drexel. . .
Purdue for some reason accepts a lot of Indians.
What about University of California San Diego?
It’s one of my dream colleges.
-American University
-Boston University
-Case Western
-Drake University
-Florida Institute of Technology
-Hendrix College
-Knox College
-Lewis & Clark College
-Occidental College
-Polytechnic Institute of NY
lakshayk, Admissions counselors at the colleges will understand the system that you have in your country but posters on this site are less likely to understand it. They may interpret your grades as if they were given in the US, which would lead to faulty conclusions. IN the US, for instance, a 70% would likely be very low-not top 10% of the class. But the 70% in India is not similar to the 70% in the US. So unless a posters says that he or she knows the Indian system well, I can’t see how they can provide reasonably accurate or helpful information.
I have checked most Indian cgpa to American Gpa converters and all of them state that I have a US gpa above 3.8
From what I heard, getting a 90% in the board exams can get you a seat at UWaterloo.
