I’m a Mexican international who wants to major in physics and only can pay up to 7000 USD per year.
Have you taken the ACT or SAT? What are your scores? What is your GPA?
What is your annual family income in USD?
If you have high stats, University of Texas at Dallas could be a possibility. Look at their AES scholarships.
@thumper1 @GTAustin Here’s my profile:
• International student
• Need financial aid.
• Want to major in physics.
• SAT: 1500+*
• SAT Subject Test in Math II and Physics around 800*
• GPA: 3.90
• Rank: 2nd in my class.
• IB student.
• Bronze medal at National Mexican Physics Olympiad and participated in training camp as a junior (Both junior and senior years won 1st place at state level and expecting to get a gold or silver medal this November).
• Gold medal at ido GEM 2015, as the first High school team from my school.
• Founder and president of an ecology group.
• 3rd place at math Olympiad state level.
• Founder and vice president of a STEM projects developer.
• Tutoring elementary school kids in math with low resources.
• Tutoring physics in HS, both for my fellow classmates and the next generation.
• Give physics Olympiad lessons (this year one of my students won 3rd place at state Olympiad).
• Part of a quantum mechanics investigation group for college students.
Hobbies (I don’t know if they matter): Playing piano and guitar, although not professionally, and reading literature and history, learning languages (French and Italian).
*That’s what I’m expecting based on several mock exams I’ve done.
When are you taking SAT/ACT exams?
@Madison85 SAT I in October and SAT II’s in November, that’s why I’m asking without the results, because they will arrive a little late to prepare my essays.
Are you a rising HS senior NOW? Or did you already graduate…since you indicate you won an award junior and senior years?
The SAT is designed to be administered while students are IN high school. It is not meant to be taken a year later. Why didn’t you take it your junior and senior years in high school?
At UTD, with those stats, you would most likely have your tuition and fees covered and either $2000/yr to $6000/yr for living expenses. At 1500 SAT, you are right between the 2 levels. The higher the score, the more likely the larger scholarship. The scholarships are not guaranteed but you got a really good shot. If you are a rising senior, apply in the fall for the best scholarships opportunities.

Hmm. I took the SATs after one year in a community college, and it was definitely looked at by the 4-yr colleges I applied to for transfer.
@thumper1 That was my mistake, I meant sophomore and junior. Yes, I’m a rising senior now.
@GTAustin even though I’m an international applicant? Thanks.
All excepted students at UTD are considered for AES scholarships. Receiving any AES scholarship gives you automatic instate tuition. There are 3 levels with both the top 2 paying full tuition. Right now, your stats are inbetween the top two. Again, these are not guaranteed scholarships but with your potential scores, class rank and ECs, I think you have a very good chance of getting one. UTD is a STEM school and you could get a good education in physics.
Also - at UTD the cost of living is about $10,000/yr - $7000/dorm and $3000/food. You could possible decrease that by living off campus with multiple roommates and cooking for yourself. Health insurance is required and you will be automatically enrolled in the university plan at $200/mo unless you can get a waiver for having another insurance plan that they accept. So total cost of living with books could be as high as $13,000/yr. Try to get your SAT score as high as possible for the larger scholarship - good luck!
