Which Common App Prompt?

I'm stuck deciding between two right now:

1) My 4 years of marching band (was really passionate about it- my school takes it quite seriously) for #4: an environment or place in which I feel content

2) My solo in my senior year show for #2: failure :(

Maybe somehow I can incorporate the two..? I don't know.
Which would be the better prompt?

Assuming you have the time, I would recommend that you write a rough draft on both topics and see which one has more potential. If you don’t the time, I would go with the first one (simply based on the fact that you’re more passionate about this topic).

Otherwise, I see potential in both topics. However, should you choose to go with number two, just bear in mind that you need to specify how you, as an individual, turned that said “failure” into something positive that had an impact on your life and where you are today. Never write one of those “depressed” essays as admissions staff see them far too often and are therefore not as likely to react well to them.

Hope this helped! And, should you write rough drafts of both as I mentioned, feel free to send them over and I can help you decide which one is better. Good luck :)

Which prompt are you hoping to do? I did Marching band for 3 years, so I know there is a lot of different ways you can spin on it. Maybe your “happy place” is on the football field practicing or marching the show. Talk about the camaraderie you create with your fellow band members and the excitement when you are at a competition / football game. Then try to relate it to a personal attribute about yourself or intellectual interest. Of course you could also just take the 1st prompt since that one is pretty versatile.

Yeah for the first idea I’m debating between #1 and #4. I think I should try the solo for failure though and how I learned that confidence is key in life. I don’t know though. I’ll try @obsessedcornell1’s idea of rough drafting both.
