Which computer and software

I'm starting to do some research for a laptop and software purchase for my D who will be a freshmen this fall. I noticed on UDEL site the recommendation for hardware and software. Has someone already determined that the pricing is best through UDEL or can you get a better deal on techbargins.com?

Also, they are recommending Vista and MS office 2007, neither of which I am a fan of. I would prefer and most people are used to XP and office 2003. Any thoughts?

I’m with you re: Vista and Office 2007.

I asked at the departmental presentation on Decision Day. It was the math dept., in my son’s case. One professor had a PC, the other a MAC for their presentations. They said either type would be OK. I didn’t ask at the time about operating systems but if you could go with either MAC or PC, then I’m sure XP would be fine. Windows 7 should be coming out possibly late summer or early fall (may be too late for our students), it will replace Vista, so that’s another thing to consider.

MAC is always an option too. Perhaps you can contact your D’s department and see if they have any specific preferences or requirements.

I planned on waiting until the last possible minute, and then see what’s available and who has the best prices.

What major? I took a business class this semester in Management Information Systems that required assignments to be completed on a PC with Office 2007 . Everyone with a mac was told they would have to complete the assignments in the computer lab.

We got our D’s through the UDel site last year - compared favorably to anything else we could find.

She is a business major and has a Mac and hasn’t had any issues.
