Which dorm are you in??

The floor plans for Cohen/Bissell only show the dorm area. On the map it looks like the two buildings connect to a third building. Is this the common area/laundry facilities? What's it like? I'm glad you said that, Athena, when I found out I got a single, I was a little freaked out, and thought I just didn't match anybody!

I'm excited--despite a late housing app, I got into East Wheelock! McColloch, to be more specific. I found the floor plans, and it looks like I have a two-room double. I was really hoping to get in, but wasn't expecting to. Best of luck to everyone else with their housing assignments!

@Ursdad: I know for a fact that is a possible setup--the dorm I stayed in during Dimensions was exactly that. I suppose if students wanted to, though, they could have a single and double room, but in a way, the common room idea just makes more sense.

"did u request the choates or did u just get placed there?"

Prepschool05,

No, I didn't but it is where I wanted to be--I got lucky!

Second floor double in Brown.

I'm not sure the exact percentage of people who got singles, but we have quite a few. Some people who did not request substance free housing were placed there, since fewer people requested it than we had rooms set aside, but I don't think it happened terribly frequently.

Sorry if I missed a question. :) I just got into work so I'm answering a million at a time!

I got a two-room double in Morton (East Wheelock).

A two-room double mean my roommate and I sleep in separate rooms, right?

Rockin' out in Cohen

It is actually a living room and a bed room but you can roommate can set it up that you both have separate rooms. (be prepared there is no elevator in your building)

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~orl/images/floor-plans-03/morton-4.gif

Morton is one of my fave. buildings. My best friend lived there freshman year and it's just so nice and airy and cheerful looking. PS- the janitor is such a sweetheart. I worked for housing over Reunions this June, and my cluster was EW. She still remembered both me and my roommate from several years ago, and I didn't even live on the floor!

hey is brown a good dorm? was it renovated? i got the first floor of brown! this is sick i am so happy to be near THE FRATS!

"Morton is one of my fave. buildings."

That's great. Looking at the floor plans, two things interest me. First is a large circle that seems to be on every floor in Morton. Anyone have any idea what that is? A spiral staircase perhaps?

Second is a large empty area between 406B and 401A. Is this a living room area? Anyone know what sort of stuff you have in the Morton living room area? Any extra stuff you get in your dorm room (apart from the usual twin bed, desk, chair, dresser, bookcase and closet/wardrobe)? Is there a kitchen area on every floor or just one in Morton? Where is the piano?

Any pictures of Morton (inside and from the outside)? All I have is that picture they use for everything in East Wheelock, of Andres, Morton and Zimmerman side by side (you can just make out the word "Morton" on the Morton building.

AthenaNY, could you be more specific on what exactly you thought was great about Morton?

Daughter lived in morton this past year and though it was great. As classes vary from year to year the 08's who lived in Morton really liked each other and were a pretty cohesive group so they had no drama going on. As far as Dorm living goes, Morton is really nice.

The large empty area between 406B and 401A is basically the hall way and I think a common room. you can look over your bannister all the way down to the first floor (sorry, no spiral staircase).

The 4 building of ew are joined by Brace commons so literally you can go from building to building without having to go out side. Brace commons has a full kitchen/ meeting room and a snack bar.
The Snack Bar is open from Monday to Friday for breakfast, from 8:00am to 10:00am and from Sunday to Thursday for latenight service from 10:00pm to 2:00am

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~dds/text/eastwheelock.shtml

As far as furniture, you just get the basic stuff and no extras. The living room is empty. It basically up to you and your roommate as to how you want to configure your space. D lived on the 3rd floor in morton in a 3 room Quad. what she & roommate did was move their desks into the living room to free up more space in the bedroom. The placed the fridge in the living room and purchased a futon (that way when people stayed over there was a place to crash and you could work without disturbing your roomate). I definitely do not remember seeing a piano.

i am in mclane, in the river. your daugter and i have already discussed our close proximity to each other on the siberian tundra of dartmouth, sybbie!

but yeah. so that is where i am.

Hey G,

Good to hear from you. Hope that you had a really good vacation. The 2 of you will be definitely lamenting about your long walk across hte campus. She'll be over at the River doing laundry because there are no laundry rooms in the treehouses. She is taking solace in the fact that she has a pretty nice size room with 2 closets :)

i did have a good vacation - i went to france for a few weeks and stayed with a french family for one of them. i hope your summer has been going well, also - i think this is the first time i have actually wanted summer to pass quickly!

i'm taking solace in my three-room double. because i was all, okay, what if my roommate is a pack-rat too? where are we going to fit two sets of skis and all the clothes, etc. in a one-room double? plus maybe we'll avoid the "thayer layer." (i don't know who described it to me as such but i almost died, so i now repeat that phrase as often as possible for its entertainment value.) but, in your daughter's case, i have the feeling the two closets are much needed.

Gracilisae and others assigned to the River dorms -

People hear so much negativity about the River dorms that they naturally dread it before they even get there. For Dartmouth, the River is a relatively long distance from the center of Campus. For an average college campus, its really not that that far.

As Slipper and Athena and others might be able to confirm, in previous years, River students have really enjoyed great, tight friendships which large numbers of their dormmates. And, a three room double is a pretty nice arrangement. Apparently, its common every year for there to be students assigned to subfree dorms who did not request one, but you probably aren't going to find that to be a problem, no matter which you requested. So, I hope you aren't completely dreading it because you don't need to, at all! The entire first year is going to be an incredible experience and you are probably going to find great friends, in your dorm as well as outside of it, to share the experience with.

They knew you were coming so they gave you an extra room (are you sure you didn't write on your housing application "I have an awful lot of stuff:)) It is the best of both worlds, it you and roomie hit it off fine, if not, atleast you have your own space.

Now a word to the wise....
Hey, no matter what you think of them take those ugly Ugg boots to school with you because you are going to have a new appreciation for them as the 2 of you literally trek to class. She said they were truth in advertising as faras keeping your feet warm and killed her boots last year and will probably have to get another pair before she comes.

It is a trade-off that Dartmouth really has worked out fairly well - the walk is longer from the River dorms, and a little longer from EW, but you guys will like those 3 room doubles. Greensleeves is excited about the Choates, but envious of ya'll being able to sleep in one room and have living space in another - in the long run that is a more comfortable way to live.

why are the rooms that small in the choates? what happens if you got one of the biggest doubles in brown? are they still small compared to other school or just compared to the big chimney rooms at dartmouth?
