First, keep checking ROAR. You never know when a spot will open up! I’m not sure what the process is for switching rooms if you already reserved one yet want to swap into a nursing FIG. May 1 is a big date, so make sure you’re checking then.

If one opens up, go for it! That will probably be your best option.

If you can’t make it into a nursing FIG, try one that’s related. For example, there are FIGs geared toward honors students, life science students, pre-meds, service learning, women’s leadership, etc. Many of those FIGs would play nicely into a nursing schedule.

In my opinion, many of the FIGs are quite similar. The point of the FIG is for you to take your classes with people you know so they can help you and you have familiar faces, and so that you can have a seminar class once a week to check in with you and make sure you’re adjusting to college life well. For the most part, FIG classes are pre-reqs for other classes or are gen ed requirements. Even if you don’t end up in a nursing FIG, the FIG program would still be worthwhile because not many of the benefits are strictly major-based. So while the nursing FIG might have a class or two about nursing or about the nursing program, it probably won’t be wholly different from other FIGs. You won’t be at a disadvantage for nursing school because you missed out on a nursing FIG, and certainly there are students that were never in a FIG and are still successful nursing majors.

If I were you, I’d first try for the nursing FIG through ROAR. If that didn’t work, I’d go for a related field FIG. If that didn’t work, I’d go for a FIG in a res hall that I wanted to live in (for example, I lived in Discovery freshman year because I liked that it was new and had the jack and jill bathrooms). If you’re still out of luck, I’d go for a FIG that sounds like you’d meet the coolest group of people. If that still doesn’t end up successful, either bag the FIG idea and be brave, or go for a FIG that’s completely unrelated. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up liking it!

If you’re interested in Greek life, there are some Greek life FIGs that I’ve heard good things about. They’re housed in Jones or Lathrop and are usually pretty big and popular.

Good luck!
