I'm looking for a dorm recommendation from someone who knows the diff types of dorms. Preferably somewhere near the English/Psych/Law departments, and near the fitness center and library. A place where people like to go out to parties on weekends (as opposed to playing video games 90% of the time) but also respect the need for studying hard. I"m fairly extroverted and friendship is HUGE to me so I'd like a social place, but at the same time, I'm not at all preppy or sorority-ish so I don't want a place where everybody is like that because I don't want to feel like an outsider.

ALso, which dorms have nicest rooms, etc? (But the above criteria and how much I'd relate to my peers, as well as location on campus, is much more important than room size, community bathroom type, etc)

There are no dorms centrally located except maybe Broward/Jennings and those dorms suck to live in. I hated walking at first too but a year in I wasn’t phased about walking a mile or 2 between classes.

The best non-honors rooms are in the Murphree/Sledd area. You only have to share a bathroom with maybe 6-8 people and the rooms have some humanity to them unlike the ones built in the 1960’s or later (even Hume is bad in this respect).

As to the “personality” of each dorm, I have no idea. Sorry!

A centrally located dorm (besides Broward and Rawlings which I wouldnt recommend as they are pretty nasty- I used to live there) would be Mallory. They have been renovated recently and are VERY clean and nice. Its a traditional style dorm, you’ll be sharing the bathroom with the whole floor (30 some people?) and a room with another person. Seems social enough to me- of course it will depend on the dynamic of your floor.

Thanks everyone! I did some research and I"m thinking Yulee, Reid or Mallory (esp. cool since my name happens to be Mallory). Anyone have insight on any of those?

I live in Sledd right now. It’s in the murphree area. It’s like the PERFECT location, right next to the gym, the library, and the stadium. Pretty close to classes too. The rooms in the building are all completely different, no 2 look alike. Some rooms are 10x better than a traditional style dorm (my friend’s down the hall have a common area that connects their 2 rooms), but some are just about the same. I would recommend this dorm, the only thing is though, it’s not as social as some of the other dorms. I think I would have met more people had a chosen a dorm like Broward.. So it’s up to you as to what’s more important, being in the most social dorm that is kinda far from stuff, or having a great location with better rooms but a quiet hall.

I know that being in a place that’s social where I could make lots of friends is more important to me than nice room setup. But, I’ve heard Broward is very sorority-ish and I"m not (I’m more quirky, nonconformitive, etc but I love hanging out with people and going to stuff) so I wouldn’t want to in a place where I’d be a minority by choosing not to go Greek. The last thing I want is to feel left out in any way, or be surrounded by lots of people who are involved in something that I’m not part of.

I live in Yulee right now, and I love it. There are quite a few girls on my floor, and while there are a couple of really introverted ones, most make the effort to get to know everyone. The bathrooms were redone a couple of years ago, so they’re reaaaally nice, and the rooms themselves aren’t too bad. It’s a really good location, too - I can get pretty much anywhere on campus within 10 minutes on foot.

Just as a heads up.. Reid is a fine arts dorm, so a lot of the people that live in there are into that, and Yulee is international or something. I’d go with Mallory if I were you, I have friends in that hall and it’s really nice for a traditional dorm set up, it’s very clean and re-done and whatnot.
