Hi! I'm starting to think about housing, and I think I'm either going to try for busch, douglass, or livingston. I will be a bio major, maybe a bio and animal sci/double major, so busch sounds pretty good. However, I also want to work in the barns at douglass, so that also sounds good. But is douglass coed? And livingston has those nice, new complexes, but I probably won't be able to get those as a freshman, will I? I don't know too much about housing, so if you could help me out that would be great. Thanks!

You can’t choose the individual dorm you want, only the campus. It sounds like Cook or Douglass would be a good fit for you because you want to work with animals and major in biology. (Cook is full of people in SEBS, though I’m not sure if you’re part of that.) And despite everyone’s misconceptions, Douglass is mostly co-ed. You have to request all-girls’ housing if you want that; it’s a special interest program. The new Livi apartments are for upperclassmen, so you can apply for those as a sophomore or upperclassman. ;)

Is there a specific environment you’re hoping for from your dorms?

Thanks for replying! Yes! I would be going into SEBS! As for the new livi apartments, aw shucks haha

I’m probably going to be one of the more studious students, but I’m kind of looking for a more social environment because I can be introverted; with a more social roommate, I feel like it’s a nice balance, and they would help me become more extroverted :)

If you’re in SEBS, you could definitely meet other kids in SEBS who live on Cook or Douglass. Most of the Busch and Livi kids are science/math/business majors (well, they’re the ones that try to get on those campuses anyway). I think most of the traditional dorms are pretty social, especially since everyone’s a freshman and they want to get to know everyone. It gets a little tough to get your work done when people get loud, but in the end it’s pretty fun. =) I live on Douglass now, and I do like these dorms a lot. (If you end up in Nicholas Hall on Cook, they have really nice bathrooms and are super close to the dining hall.)

Thanks! I think I will pick Cook :)

The typical freshman dorms on Cook are Perry & Voorhees. The typical freshman dorm on Douglas is Katzenbach. Katzenbach is next to the dining hall and across the street from a bus stop. IMO it’s much more convenient than Perry or Voorhees.

Up to you if you want to live in a co-ed dorm with freshman guys, but having been in Perry once they are pretty gross!

Thanks for replying! The only reason why I ruled out Douglass was because I heard it was slightly more difficult transportation wise! Cleaner dorms definitely sound more appealing…so I guess now I’m stuck between Cook and Douglass? I really just want to go with whatever is more convenient. Being in SEBS and a bio and animal sci double major (pre-vet), I assume most of my classes will be on Cook? But Douglass really isn’t that far away. Or will my classes be on Busch? I want to try to avoid taking the bus as much as possible because they can become unreliable; don’t wanna be late for class!

Technically the REXL and REXB travel on Douglass, not Cook. Honestly, the difference between Cook and Douglass is so minimal, if you ask anyone to define the boundaries between the two campuses, they’ll have a hard time. Look on the website for more information, but honestly, being put on either Cook or Douglass wouldn’t affect you in such a way you would wish you were on one or the other. Most of your classes would be on Cook or Douglass. Science classes are held in Hickman Hall on Douglass and on Livingston. It all depends on your schedule and the classes you choose to take. Some classes are only offered on Busch (electives, some others, nothing SEBS-specific), and you can’t really get around that.

Now, I think I’m going to with Douglass haha Just because it’s all girls, and cleaner dorms are definitely preferable. Do you know if I have to be in the women’s program in order to live on Douglass?

Douglass isn’t all girls; I live on Douglass now and it’s co-ed. (Lippincott and Gibbons are both co-ed on Douglass.) You have to specifically request for an all-girls’ dorm if that’s what you want. In regards to cleaner dorms, it’s really just luck with that.

I don’t know how much cleaner a coed dorm is vs an allgirls. They don’t share bathrooms, and that is where you see the cleanliness difference most, plus, they are cleaned regularly so again, not a problem.

I agree that Cook vs Douglass is not an issue; you will probably end up walking everywhere anyway. Also not a big deal if you have a Busch class; the buses are fairly reliable now that the new company has adjusted. Leave early for class and you should be fine.

Cool, thanks! I’ll probably just flip a coin since Cook and Douglass are pretty much the same haha As for bussing, I’m glad they’re more reliable now because I was pretty worried about getting from C/D to Busch and vice versa.

I lived in Katzenbach last year, the all-girls special interest housing. You do have to join Douglass Residential College (DRC), but the requirements aren’t bad (one class, living in the dorm one year, and a one week externship, which is good career experience). Everyone is really friendly in Douglass and I met the girls who are like family now. Katzenbach, where you’d be as a freshman, is literally right next to the dining hall and a bus stop. It’s less than a 5 minute walk to the Cook Campus Center and the Cook/Douglass Gym. I don’t know how far the barns are, but it can’t be more than 15 minutes. Also, you can apply for scholarships if you join DRC. I would suggest visiting if you can, it’s really the best way to get a feel for the different campuses. Good luck!

Thanks for replying! I did visit all campuses, and even drove by Katzenbach, Perry, and Voorhees dorms to see what they look like. Now that you said the requirements aren’t bad, I’m reconsidering DRC haha so it’s really not that much extra work? That’s what I was concerned about because I think I’ll have enough work as is, and I don’t want to take on too much.

Daughter would be majoring Biology in Fall, possibly all in honor courses, I assume these classes would be in Busch campus, we would like her to avoid taking buses for the first year at least; can someone provide suggestions for dorm? Thanks.

Structural- no one wants to take the buses, but sometimes it just works out that way. Many science and engineering courses are on Busch, but she may have to take some of her elective/core courses on other campuses if she can’t get her first choices during registration.

Did she apply for honors housing? Or regular housing? The best way to get your first choice of campus for housing is to apply as soon as the application opens up.

Thanks rualum, I’ll let her know your comments.
