I am going to be a freshman at University of Delaware this fall, and I wanted to know which dorm would be the best to put as my first choice on my housing application.

I am an asthmatic and have Raynaud's Phenomenon (my hands and feet turn blue if I get too cold), so A/C and heat are important for me to have; that is, I could live without A/C, but I would like to avoid being in a dorm that doesn't have it. I would kind of like to be closer to the heart of campus and be in a dorm that's more social so I can make friends, if possible.

From what I've researched, I'm thinking about putting down:
1.) East Campus Residence Halls
2.) Rodney Hall
3.) Russell Hall

So what I'm really trying to ask is, based on my needs and preferences, which of the UD freshman dorms would be best to put as my first choice? Has anyone had any positive or negative experiences in any specific freshman halls at UD?

If you visit the Housing Services website there is a form you can have your physician complete so you can submit it to request specific medical accommodations for housing to address your medical issues. You have to submit this along with completing the regular housing request form. I believe the new dorm on East campus (750+ beds) has A/C, A/C is also available in the suite rooms on the Laird (North) campus, and also in the Rodney Complex on West campus. The other freshman dorms, including Russell, do not have A/C. No matter what dorm you get as long as you make an effort you should have no problems making friends. The suite rooms on Laird campus are a little more of a walk to many classrooms but bus transportation is also available. Good luck.

Thank you for your response, mwallenmd! I’d really like to get into the new dorms of East Campus, but I hear that they are going to house the honors students there so my chances of getting a room there are not very high.

I stayed in George Read a couple of years back at the Governor’s School for Excellence and I thought the dorms were really nice. The only thing I didn’t like was how far away it was from the rest of the campus. Also, I’m kind of worried that if I stayed there, the social community would not be as great because everyone has their own bathroom.

Rodney looks OK… it’s on the small side and I’ve heard that it’s a hot spot for parties, which I kind of don’t like. I like a good time, but I would NOT like it if I couldn’t sleep or study in my room because everyone is partying in my hall.

I’ve submitted my forms to my doctors and am waiting to get them back. Hopefully everything will work out.

Are you a student or alumnus? Are you familiar with any of these dorms? If so, was there a residence hall that you liked the best?

It looks like about 300 or so non-honors students will be able to be housed in the new dorm so maybe you might get lucky. Our D lived in Rodney C dorm her freshman year. She did find it very nice having the AC for Sept. and May. While Rodney has somewhat of a “reputation” as a “party” dorm a lot depends on the students on your floor. In all honesty most all freshman dorms exhibit some degree of “partying”. She did not feel the “partying” was any more significant on her floor than her friends experienced in other dorms. Rodney does have a large number of single rooms so if you are interested in this it would be a good dorm to consider. Rodney has its own dining hall, a small workout gym area, and its own convenience store so these things are also a plus IMHO. Its location is such that it actually is closer to many classroooms than the dorms on the East Campus (especially if you are a Business major, Music major, or Nursing major). The main student center (Trabant) is only about a 10 minute walk away and the library is about 15 minutes away. So Rodney’s location is not bad at all. Unfortunately I can’t give you any more specific information on other dorms as she lived in a sorority house her sophomore year and in an apartment on Main Street her last two years (she graduated in 2010 with her BSN). Good luck in your dorm assignment.
