I know it's early, but what are the dorms like? I've heard that each residence hall has its own personality. Any Tufts people want to share their thoughts on this?

Hey,

I lived in Houston my freshmen year and I had an absolute blast. As a freshmen, I would recommend all frosh housing, most my closest friends are from my floor in houston. Additionally, Miller is one of the nicest dorms on campus and my current abode. Finally, please remember that you can not request a specific dorm, as a result, the ResLife folks decide where to put you.

My son asked for freshman housing but didn't get it. He was assigned to Miller where it is primarily freshmen and sophomores, and is very happy there. He can't imagine being anywhere else. As Buratino said, you can't request a specific dorm for freshman year but following years you choose by lottery number. My son's lottery number for next year is excellent and he is considering staying put in Miller. Miller is in a great location right on the residential quad, conveniently between Carmichael Dining Hall and the Joey stop at Olin. Most importantly, Miller is a very social dorm. He has made many wonderful friends there. From a mom's point of view, the rooms are teeny tiny compared to, say, Hill Hall, but this doesn't seem to bother my son.

I live in Carmichael and the room is almost idenitcle to a jail cell right down to the most minor detail. We don't refer to our rooms by what floor they are on, instead we just call them "blocks" because really thats what they are...a horific excuse for a student living existance. Is this what I'm paying $30,000 a year for?

Its absolutely inexcusable...and the bathrooms here? Absolutely filthy, they don't even clean them...I walked in to take a shower the other day to discover a pleasant little suprise...someone had DEFECATED all over the floor :(

No one ever said the dorms were very nice. I'm living in Haskell, but I've actually found that over time things aren't really so bad (even if I'm a loud complainer). I lived in South my freshman year and really enjoyed it. The bathrooms there are the main selling point because they're 1) lockable 2) clean and relatively new.

D loves South, also has a great lottery number for next year and wants to return to South, she likes the location. Illmaticmindstate-check your tuition bill- D's is $10K higher! Sorry you are having such a hard time in Carmichael. I hope you were able to voice your serious concerns to the proper people. Take pictures and document the conditions.Become pro active not re active. Do something to help fix it!

I did the Haskell and South experience as well. Haskell is not that bad - ugly, yes, but the rooms are a decent size, you get to know your suitemates well, and... well, I like the small dorm thing.

I absolutely loved South - got one of the singles in the middle (near the elevator - the x52 numbers) - so it was huge. Two closets! Two ethernet connections! Space for my stereo sytem (on its own bookshelf with TV on top), fridge, easy chair, extra bookshelf, and skis! When I moved the easy chair/fridge, I could fit a queen-sized Aerobed on my floor. (Ahh... those were the days.)

For Haskell - I would recommend Velcro for the walls. I covered my side with tapestries (very colourful) and posters - there were a few uncovered inches, but it was a nice effect overall.
