New House = best freshman dorm... but it's highly unlikely that you'll get in at this point.

Morewood, Donner, New House are all pretty social since the bathrooms are per hall. People just tend to leave their doors open as well.

Donner and Morewood are the two dorms closest to classes.

am i gonna get stuck in a really bad dorm if i haven't filled out housing forms by now?

The order that housing gets assigned is by when they receive your deposit, not housing forms.

New House has tiny rooms.

More information on dorms here: http://www.housing.cmu.edu/buildings/

New House.

How do I pay the deposits? Has it not been covered by the $600 that I submitted when I decided to enroll?

Yes, it's covered by the $600 deposit.

Now the deposit is $600? It was $500 last year.

I wrote a lengthy discussion on CMU housing in some other thread, but let me summarize: New House has small rooms but is nice, Morewood is nice, Donner is OK, all the residences on the hill are old but have larger rooms, Oakland Apartments are good because you get a bathroom and kitchen, but you're 15 minutes off campus.

I live in London Terrace, and it's the worst building ever (as far as... it's falling apart) but it's nice to have my own space. Other people like the constant commotion of a dorm.

Wherever you do end up living, make sure you spend as much time as possible outside of your room, being social and whatnot.

Does anyone know how easy/hard it is to get an apartment on your own?

Also--i've been hearing the webster apartments are really really far from campus compared to the other places. How bad is the commute?

webster is the farthest dorm - it's also one of the nicest. it's 4 blocks (?) away, and walking, takes ~15 min. there's a shortcut through the parking lot behind morewood that gets you on campus faster. Also, the cmu shuttle runs between all off campus housing and campus pretty frequently.

As far as getting an apartment on your own, it's pretty easy in general, though it may be hard depending on what you're looking for (close to campus, low price, furnished/unfurnished, air conditioning, etc.). Most of the junior and senior class probably live off campus.

As a freshman, I would suggest living on campus just because you'll be closer to your new friends and will be able to meet people much more easily than you will in an apartment, where your neighbors will probably be upperclassmen. "really, really far" is relative, however- at a larger school, your campus would be at least that big. As a freshman, if you put "apartment" as your first choice, you're likely to land in some of the undesireable apartments, like Shirley and Veronica, where you will have a bit more space than in a dorm and a kitchen, but the condition of the rooms is not as nice.

new house, its the best

Hows Mudge? Is it close by to the main scene? And Doherty Appartments?

Doherty Apartments are right across the street from the Gesling Stadium. So they are really sought after by on-campus residents. So you either have to be a senior with a good room-draw number (the system they use for room assignments when you're no longer a freshman) or know someone already living in Doherty to pull you in. Getting in as a freshman is rare. Really rare.

Mudge is small, but it's nice inside from what I've seen. It's got its own courtyard in the back. Mudge isn't too far away. Right next to New House on the corner of Forbes Ave. and Fifth Ave. Much closer than the apartments like Fairfax, Webster, etc.

I suggest New House above all. The lounges are nicer than any other dorm on campus, providing a great social atmosphere on each floor. The study rooms are a good way to get out of your room to do work. The smaller rooms are remedied by air conditioning (only dorm to have it). I highly recommend it.

Does anyone have any opinions on Cathedral Mansions (Oakland Apartment)? I just found out I received a 2 person, single bedroom apartment here and I don't know too much about these apartments.

Catman is not great, but there are worse apartments. They have quite a bit of space, but aren't particularly well maintained. You'll have a couch and table in the living room, and a kitchen table/chairs, too. The elevators had a habit of getting stuck, but they've now been replaced.

Catman = Cathedral Mansions

Expect a big room that's sort of old and maybe a little run-down. Expect a 10-15 minute walk to campus, depending on how fast you are, and don't expect air conditioner (but you can always hope). You'll have a kitchen and bathroom, and the one bedroom is nice cause you have a separate bedroom and living room.

Since you're in Oakland, I would suggest getting on the commuter meal plan (details when you get on campus, just pick any meal plan for now), unless you're adverse to cooking. Also, your large apartment might be a nice place to have some friends over. Catman itself is a big building, by the way.

which dorm has a piano in the lounge? i saw a sample lounge of mudge that had a piano...
do all mudge lounges have pianos? ? ?
