In my school, you can't be part of Varsity and a performing club. I tried out and got into both the Forensic guild and the Newspaper. Varsity is interscholastic with other schools and so is Forensic. Forensic is considered a performing club because they train after school. What would look better on a college application :
Varsity + Newspaper vs. Forensic Guild?

Dream school : Dartmouth (most likely applying ED)
How does Dartmouth view these ECs? Which would be more thought-provoking?

Forensic guild? I myself compete in forensics, but I’ve never heard the term “guild” in that context. Is it the same as a debate team?

Do what most interests you, not what you think will look better for college admissions. I myself would do varsity+newspaper. But that’s just me.

The one that would look better would be the one you want to do more.

-.-

Well if you are planning to major in Forensics or anything science, then it would be Forensics Guild.
If not and you are planning to do English or social science, then probably the newspaper/varsity.

Forensics = speech and debate.

Debate seems to be most popular among students who want to go to law school.

If you can achieve competitive success in Forensics (e.g. breaking to debate quarters or extemp finals at the Harvard invitational), then I’d be extremely impressed as an adcom, especially if you want to major in anything related to English, any social science, or law.

I know this would sound like a cliche, but really do what you want to do, not just to look good on college app. So do what you are more interested in and passionate about.

it may sound cliche, but it’s the absolute truth. There’s no dodging around it.

Forensic Guild would be the debate team. I’m completely torn between these ECs as I wish I could do them all. I wouldn’t mind doing one or the other… Now I would just like to see which would appear better on an application.

Although I think I’m leaning on the Varsity + Newspaper because it shows overall well roundedness. Would you think this would be the better move?

I don’t think one move is necessarily better than the other, but I would go with forensic guild.

Actually, it depends on the amount of time you have left in high school. I recommend starting forensics in any grade other than 12th. I’m not sure if the same applies Varsity and Newspaper, but if you compete in forensics, you’ll definitely want to do well in it – something that requires a time span of at least two years.

I’m a sophomore now. I live in the Philippines so I don’t think the competitions here would make as huge an impact as those in the US. After my senior year in 2013, I will be doing a 5th year of HS in the US since 2nd Year HS here is considered freshman year over there
So that gives me 3 years. So you think I should I should join the guild?

I’m not familiar with high school forensic competition (only collegiate international debate) in the Philippines, so I’m not sure which ECs I would choose. Still, I’d probably join the guild. I don’t think one set of ECs is necessarily better than the other, though.
