Which Engineering is right for me?

Hello, I am a community college student with a 3.7+ GPA. My high school GPA was terrible. I didn't work hard at all.

I am trying to transfer either to NC State University or Georgia Tech.

I am stuck on which engineering field I want to major into. Here's my situation.

I've been a 10+ years with computers, I know a good amount of knowledge in computers, although I have never build my own because parents won't let me. Computers still interest me.

Somehow I have fallen in love with automobiles, I love talking about that, you name any parts camshaft, inlet manifold, fuel injectors, ac compressor etc, and I can answer with confidence. It seems that cars are the only thing I think about, whenever I am bored.

Now I am in an intro to engineering class and electricity has interested me a bit.

If I go towards computers, I want to to both electrical/computer engineering. And if I go towards automobiles I will do mechanical engineeering.

Now my question is, how do I decide which is the best field for me?

Thanks!

Visiting different jobs will help you get a better idea of what you are getting into. Call a couple of places that fall under Electrical or Computer E and the same with Mechanical E and ask to shadow for a couple hours. You could use a job finder site or just search google for companies in your area. IMO, that is a great step towards knowing what job you will want to do for your career.

You could also talk to career services. Or if you have chosen a school for engineering already, go talk to their engineering department. As a transfer, you wont have the normal freshmen year buffer to be introduced to the different fields and choose a program. Someone in the department might be willing to talk to you about your decision.
