My son is applying ED and someone advised him to select an engineering major that is less popular/impacted to improve his chances of being accepted. They also advised that changing within the Engineering school later would not be a problem. Can you advise?

A quick rule of thumb: Look at the requirements for changing into a major. The higher the requirements, the more impacted the major is.

The list of majors and their change of major requirements is here: [Majors | Engineering Advising Center](http://eadvise.calpoly.edu/majors/)

You still have to think about switching majors early if you are in engineering. Particularly if you are off in CSC or SE, since their classes have relative little overlap with the rest of the college. You and your son would be well advised to check the change of major policies here: [Changing Majors | Engineering Advising Center](http://eadvise.calpoly.edu/majors/changing-majors/) . Just remember those aren’t quite set in stone, a signature from a department head might be able to override some requirements, but not others.

If your son is not sure about what kind of engineering to major in, then have him apply to the General Engineering (GENE) department. From there he can go anywhere in the College of Engineering and it has a large number of kids in it. My son went into GENE and transferred out to Mechanical Engineering after the first quarter quite easily.
