Which Engineering Schools Should I Be Looking At?

Freshman:
UW: 2.86 (2.7 Core Class UW GPA)
W:3.12
C in Honors Biology and Honors Geometry
I took 2 honors classes total (Bio and Geom)

Sophomore:
UW: 3.06 (2.7 Core Class UW GPA)
W: 3.21
C in PST and Spanish 2
Took 1 honors (Chemistry) and got a B & one advanced (not as high as honors but above average, no weighting awarded) class (PST)

Junior (So Far):
UW: 3.73 (3.5 Core Class UW GPA)
W: 4.0+
Am taking 1 AP (Chem), 1 honors class (English) and 1 advanced class (Pre-Calc)

I had a really rough freshman and sophomore year, then did very well junior year, please take this into consideration.

SAT's:
Shooting for a 2100+ and I am almost certain I can hit 2000+ with:
750 Math
620 CR
630 W (10-12 essay)

I took the march SAT, will know how I did by next thursday.

I have good EC's including:
-Habitat for humanity - 3 years - I was the leader of the flooring team one year and we laid the entire floor of a house in 2 days.
-Music - 6 years - I play guitar and bass.
-Model UN - I should have around 5-7 committees by the time I graduate. I have participated in 3 so far and won 3 awards.
-MADMen - 1 year - I helped a freshman who was struggling with social and academic issues.
-I am applying for the drexel summer materials camp.
-I am getting a job this summer.

WHICH ENGINEERING SCHOOLS SHOULD I BE LOOKING AT?

So far I have been looking at Georgia Tech, UIUC, Illinois and Wisconsin - Madison. Are these within reach?

Probably tough admissions-wise with the low 9th and 10th grade GPA.

But there are important questions, like your state of residency and budget limit. Most out of state publics are not generous with financial aid, although some are relatively less expensive at out of state list price (e.g. Minnesota, NCSU, Virginia Tech, various SUNYs and CSUs, UAB).

I’m from NJ, my families income is sufficient enough to handle almost any school. I will apply without considering price, then make my determination based on price, academics and the campus.

Which schools should I be looking at, regardless of price?

Can someone else please comment, this is very important to me.

What kind of engineering?

Have you verified for sure that your family can pay up to $60,000 per year (what a private or out-of-state public university can cost without need or merit aid)?

If you get your GPA over 3.0, UAB can function as a safety, because you’ll qualify for the [Blazer Elite Scholarship](<a href=“Error 404 | Not Found”>Error 404 | Not Found) there (which will leave about $10,000 per year net cost after applying it against the cost of attendance).

With a GPA of around 3.0, you are likely looking at less selective schools, since the better known flagships like your initial list or Rutgers are likely to be high reaches. Use [Accredited Program Search](http://main.abet.org/aps/AccreditedProgramSearch.aspx/AccreditationSearch.aspx) to find engineering degree programs of your interest.

Your chances at the more selective engineering schools like those you listed are low with your high school record; you may be able to upgrade your chances by attending community college, getting top grades there, and then transferring as a junior.

* my families income is sufficient enough to handle almost any school. I will apply without considering price*

Please ASK your parents how much they’ll pay. Ask them if they’ll pay $55+ per year. Many Tri-State people have good incomes, but taxes and cost of living in those states prevents them from actually paying full-freight. Your parents may be under the impression that you’ll get some aid or scholarships.

However, if your family has a very high income and/or college savings for you, then paying may be a non-issue and you’ll be very lucky.

ask them to be sure so that you’ll know what you’re dealing with.

What will your cum GPA be after you finish the 11th grade?

My cum GPA after junior year will be about 3.1-3.2 UW and 3.4-3.5 W. Also, did you say rutgers was a high reach? With a 2000+ maybe 2100+ SAT and instate. My parents can do $50-60k if need be but obviously the cheaper it is the better.

I’d have to agree Rutgers is a reach. Look at the Common Data Set http://oirap.rutgers.edu/instchar/Cds/NewBrunswickRegion11.pdf</a> . Section C7 states class rigor, class rank, GPA and scores are very important. Based on the classes you listed your class rigor and rank are probably not very high. Only your scores (if they come to fruition) stand out. State residency is only considered. You’d have a better chance at a school like Buffalo. http://apb.buffalo.edu/facts/cds/cds2010.pdf</a></p>

My school does not rank it is the number 1 public in south jersey, I’m in state, my SAT is above the 75th percentile. As far as class rigor goes by the time I graduate I will have taken 5 APs, 6 honors, and I showed a huge upward trend. I still don’t see how it is a reach. If I look at the naviance scatter gram, even without looking at trend almost all the people around me have were admitted. I don’t know how much harder it is to get into engineering, but I think I can get into the school (non-eng).

What is the average eng GPA?

Also, what do you think my chances at NC state are?

Also, about my families income, it is ~175k/year. I also have a savings account, though I don’t know exactly how much is in it. My parents can afford to pay a lot, however, they want the nicest school that I can go to for the cheapest, so if it comes down to boston U at 50k and Rutgers at 30k i’ll take rutgers.

Since you’re in NJ, Rutgers is a pretty decent choice. You’ve listed most of the Big 10 schools, which are all very good for engineering. You could also try Purdue. They have lower admission requirements than the school’s listed, but still have one of the top engineering programs.

I have Purdue on my list. The other people told me I had a very small chance (though that won’t stop me from applying).

Work hard, I bombed my first two years of high school too but managed to pull my GPA from a 3.3 to 3.7 by getting 4.2s all Junior-Senior year.

Got into UIUC with a 2220 SAT.

Honestly though I’ve been rejected from all the GPA heavy schools like UCLA because of my screwups and I’ve had to accept that (sadly.)

Work damned hard, ace your math/sciences, and show your interest in engineering through E/Cs.

Thanks dustinthewind. I am currently a junior. There is even a difference between my first and second semesters. Should I include that in my essays some how?

First Semester:
UW: 3.5
W: 3.9
Second Semester:
UW: 3.85
W: 4.0+

Also, I have an A in math and a B in AP chem junior year. Last year I had a C in math and a B in Honors Chem. Year before I had 2 C’s in honors bio and honors geom unfortunately.
