I'm planning to be a premed so I need to take a year of English at Berkeley. I took AP Eng Language, got a 5, and just took AP Eng Literature.

I'm planning to major in MCB and then either minor or double major in econ. I was thinking about taking the English class my freshman year and getting it out of the way. My current schedule is

Econ 2
Math 53
Chem 1A or 4A or Physics 8A
English

Why? If you took AP lit and got a 5, you don’t need English.

I still need a year of English to apply to Med School

“Get it out of the way”? My English major heart breaks. :(

Take a look at the lower division offerings (english.berkeley.edu has the course descriptions) and see which fit your schedule. Then see see which catch your interest. If you still have a few options, post and ask for recommendations regarding what’s left.

All the reading and comp classes fulfill the med school english requirement. R5A-R5B series is the easiest to get an A in with the least amount of reading/writing. From what I’ve heard the R1A-R1B series is the hardest.

Ok I took a look through all the R&C classes, but I think I need an actual English class, as opposed to say Asian American Studies or Film Studies, to fulfill the medical school requirement.

So which one would be the easiest of the following to get an A in:
English R1A-R1B
English N1A-N1B
Rhetoric R1A-R1B
Rhetoric N1A-N1B
College Writing R4A-R4B

No, any of the R&C classes fulfill the med school requirement. I just finished taking Italian Studies R5B, and I am also pre-med, so there you go. Of the ones you listed, all of them are pretty difficult.

Oh, so if I took film studies that would fulfill the med school requirement?

Any suggestions then, I was thinking of Southeast Asian Studies…

I have a question.
If I skip out of the first semester r&c requirement with AP credit, can that be used toward the one year English requirement for pre-med?

The med school requirement is there to make sure you take classes that teach and evaluate your ability to read, analyze and write. Skipping a semester of a requirement will not satisfy a semester of this requirement for med school because you haven’t taken the class. They don’t care what kind you take, just that you take it.

That said, take your chances where you will. Does an R&C course count, regardless of department? Probably. Is it a year of English classes? Not really, but you could probably get away with it.

I heartily recommend you (general you here, I promise!) stop looking for loopholes and figure out what it is they want from you and how best to satisfy that need for them. Remember, they’ll be the ones choosing you.

Not all of the med schools require english right? They only recommend it. I think I’m going to AP out of it with English lit, because I heard there’s a LOT of writing involved in english classes at Cal :(

I’m pretty sure it’s one those “recommendations” that are pretty much a requirement. The only question is whether they’ll take classes like cultural studies as an “English” class.

Oh wow, Undecided, you’re an English major passionate about your area of study – I’m glad we have someone like you around these Berkeley CC parts!!
