Which essay topic is better?

So for the commonapp, I decided to respond to the following prompt-

Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story

I don't know if I should write about living with an alcoholic mother when I was younger, initially I thought this was a good idea because that isn't addressed in any other part of the application like playing soccer or riding horses would be. However, I don't want to be another one of the countless sob stories that they read... any opinions on whether I should write about my hardship or my experience with soccer/horses?

Thanks

You could write about a certain experience u had with soccer or horses. But watever u choose, even the alcoholic one, make sure u show how it changed u

Thanks, I could write about either and how they changed me I just didnt know which one would make me stand out more.

The best topic is the one that allows for the most detailed and revealing essay. The one that is so you that only you could write it.

Only you would know what that topic might be.

I agree that you don’t want to write a sob story (= a sentimental story or account intended chiefly to evoke sympathy or sadness.). It is possible, though, to write with insight and compassion such that the main emotions evoked are respect and admiration rather than sympathy or sadness.

When you say when I was younger…how much younger? It is possible to write a successful essay about events that occurred when you were much younger, but remember that the essay should give a sense of what sort of presence you would bring now to the campus, to the classroom, to the dormitory.

ETA:

The one that will make you stand out more is the one that is a more genuine, truer expression of who you are. The one that is so you that only you could write it.

This topic is probably the best in this season. Although it is true, you’ll need to keep focus on the essay topic all the time. A simple glimpse of mistake can ruin this essay. It is an essay which will take a lot of effort. And 650 words might be very long journey on this essay topic. (I’m not asking to reach the 650 words limit.)
