I know UF (University of Florida) has a good ranking among all the colleges mentioned below for engineering, but wanted to find out which one on the listed colleges good for computer engineering and why.

FSU (Florida State University), Tallahassee, FL

UCF (University of Central Florida), Orlando, FL

USF (University of Central Florida), Tampa, FL

FIU (Florida International University), Miami, FL

FAU (Florida Atlantic University), Boca Raton, FL

Florida Gulf Cost University (FGCU), Fort Myers, FL

UWF( University of West Florida), Pensacola, FL

Florida Polytechnic, Lakeland, FL

We should be clear that Computer Engineering is a bit different from Computer Science. Computer Engineering can be much more focused on hardware.

For example, UF has three degree programs, Computer Engineering (CEN), Computer Science (College of Engineering, CSE) and Computer Science (College of liberal Arts and Sciences, CSE).

Some of the schools in your list don’t really have a Computer Engineering programs, such as FGCU, UWF, or even FSU (most FSU grads would be Computer Science majors…only a handful are Computer Engineering majors).

So, if your interested in Computer Engineering (and not Computer Science), then other than UF, look at schools 2 thru 5 on your list. I’m not sure if Florida Poly will initially have a computer engineering program.

Gator88NE is absolutely right. We checked out FGCU at their fall open house. The school itself is very nice, but their computer science degree is part of the college of business. Their robotics lab was a disappointment - small, underfunded, out of date. No “computer engineering”-like degree there.

UCF has a terrific program, nice facilities and industry partnerships, but the school is very big… 2nd largest in the U.S. Good if you don’t mind crowds or being a number.

Florida Polytechnic - brand new state university in Lakeland (opens Fall 2014) - offers a true computer engineering degree with concentrations in digital logic design, embedded system design or machine intelligence. As a new school, they’ll start with just 500 students.

When choosing, be sure to take a look at the degrees and curriculum for each to determine if it’s more business-oriented or engineering-oriented.

I would not recommend florida poly. I am still only in high school, but some of our school’s worst students have gone on to florida polytechnic. This school is a safety net beneath your other safety nets, no matter which degree you are pursuing.
UCF is huge but has a good reputation when it comes to engineering. UCF and USF are the most popular places for people at my high school to go so I feel like I have a decent idea about them. Generally USF is associated with medicine and education - be a doctor or come back to the high school you graduated from to teach - and UCF is strong with engineering. UF is also great for engineering but out of reach for many students. FSU has a slightly more liberal arts-y reputation.
