Which Foreign Language?

I'm majoring in Psychology, possibly going into the business field in the future, but more likely the medical field. I really want to take a foreign language in college. Which language would be the most beneficial for me? I'm leaning towards either Chinese or Japanese since those hold the most interest for me, but I'm open to other suggestions.

If you’ll be practicing in the States, and you want the language that would be most beneficial in the long run, I would go with Spanish. That would be tremendously helpful in both the business field and the medical field. Of the two you mentioned, I would choose Chinese.

I had very bad experiences with the Chinese department my first year. I hear that there are some good teachers, but the ones I got were bad enough to sour me on the language totally. I do hear that Professor Wang is much better than either of mine (I had Zhang Fei, who has now left the program, and Jackie Zhang). I didn’t learn very much with either of them, but Jackie at least doesn’t make you work very hard. Zhang Fei was a whole different story, but I won’t rant about him since you won’t be dealing with him either way.

Agreeing with jenmarie that Spanish is probably going to be the most useful in a medical field, though.

Spanish or Chinese. Japanese is only good for reading animes (I’m just playing) But seriously if you want to succeed in the states Spanish is the way to go. A lot of our Latin brothers and sisters are moving up here and therefore the demand for employees who are fluent in both Spanish and English is growing exponentially. If you want to succeed gobally Chinese. Like it or not thats the next English. They are becoming a powerful global player and as more and more American Businesses shift over there, the demand for Chinese speakers will continue to rise. Also their over 1 billion of them. Thats 1/5th the worlds population. Besides, you have a much greater likelihood of getting an opportunity to practice with speakers of either of these languages than you would with Japanese.
