My friend is trying to decide which fraternity at U of M to rush. Hopefully I'll be there next semester to join him! Anyone who has any advice please help. Give overall opinions on the house, fun, reputation, professionalism, opportunities, parties, etc...thanx. He isn't just looking for one certain area...just great opportunities and a fun experience at U of M.

I am in a fraternity, and I'm not going to say which one because it has already been mentioned in the previous post, but I believe I have mentioned it on other posts so if you really want to know...

Rush has ended, and if your friend got bids from more than one place, even more props because many houses were extremely selective. Bid day was yesterday, so he should have decided. As far as fraternity houses go, none are really in great condition, except for the few dry ones. FIJI and ChiPsi are relatively nice for houses that have parties. If you want to join a fraternity go to all the houses (or as many as you can) during rush and see what each fraternity has to offer. I am not going to give you any kind of heirarchical ranking because you need to make the decision based on what fits YOU best, and mine will obviously be biased.

Good luck and GO GREEK!

2 of my floormates rushed and got bids to DKE. They seem to like it.

I visited a ton of places during Welcome Week/rush. I had planned on winter rush pretty much all along, but I still checked out a bunch of places.

The ones that I can give an opinion on (I'm going to leave out anything negative, decide for yourself):

Chi Phi - laid back guys, good parties, house is kinda dirty, but recent renovations make it a pretty good place

Delta Chi - smaller place, very nice guys. Only a couple major parties a year, but looking to add members.

Phi Kappa Psi - Decent Saturday pre-games

Sammy - nice guys, Jewish

Alpha Epsilon Pi - nice guys, Jewish

"Beta" Theta Pi - the best pre-game parties, cool guys, definitely a place for big partiers

Delta Kappa Epsilon - nice guys, house is in the middle of nowhere but nice

Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE) - huge house, huge parties, dirty. A lot of people think they are dicks, but I liked it a lot during rush, I'm probably going to head back there in the winter.

haha i like the observations...

So how about winter rush? I'm a freshman and didn't really know what was going on/ didn't want to jump right in/ couldn't tell the differences between the frats from the parties i went to. But I might want to rush this winter. How does that work? Is it just like rush in the fall? A friend of mine rushed as a sophomore, but I kind of want to as a freshman or not at all (and she's a girl, if that makes any difference).

I'm in DKE, and I'm pretty sure I met you during rush. Winter rush is smaller and over with faster than fall rush. Fraternities will begin recruitment right as winter semester starts, so if you have friends in houses, they can refer you to their rush chairs. Official recruitment starts towards the end of Janurary, with the mass meeting and 3 days of formal rush. It should be over by the beginning of February. IFC will have calendars posted. everywhere, so look for them

OK I haven't been on this site in a while, but I joined a house at UofM, and I will give you my perspective on the Greek System and houses therein. Take everything I say with a grain of salt (I'll try my best to be positive), and if you really want to join a house, go to different fraternities during rush and see which one works for you. Everyone is different.

Beta Theta Pi (BETA)- Considered by many to be the top tier house on campus, huge football pre games, pretty selective, party with only the top sororities (alpha phi, kappa, tri delt), very "fratty," do a lot of social events with SAE, all provided they stay outh of trouble, which has proven to have been difficult
pregame partner: Kappa Kappa Gamma (kappa or kkg)

Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE): Top tier, like Beta, except historically meatier, host the mudbowl every year and usually win, party with alpha phi, kkg, and tridelt, have had issues with violations in the past but are now in good standing, pretty selective, hold many social events with Beta
pregame partner: Alpha Phi

Phi Kappa Psi (Phi Psi): very strong house on campus, almost always in good standing with IFC (2 members are on IFC eboard), huge house (over 100), party with the hot sororities (tridelt, sigma kappa, etc), pretty selective, huge pregames on saturday
pregame partner: Sigma Kappa

Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE): One of the biggest fraternities on campus (over 120 brothers), have massive parties, party with tridelt, sigma kappa, etc, generally strong at IM sports, Greek Week champions last year, considered by non greeks to be douchebags but actually really nice guys (they get this reputation because they have massive parties and they need to be a$$holes to keep everything under control). in good standing with IFC (IFC prez is a Pike).
Pregame partner: Kappa Alpha Theta (Theta)

Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI): reinstated 5 years ago and has since grown to be one of the strongest/most desireable houses on campus. They party with hot sororities-alpha phi, dg, axo, and are very strong academically and in IM sports. They also won fraternity of the year last year. They don't have many big parties in their house, so that keeps it nice.
Pregame partner: Alpha Chi Omega (AXO or A chi o)

Delta Kappa Epsilon (Deke or DKE): Grown substantially over the past 5 years, though not as big as the previously mentioned houses, have fun parties (tahitian weekend- 3 day party where they bring sand into their basement is one of the best fraternity parties on campus), party with hot sororities, mainly DG and axo, considered to be nice guys by greeks and non greeks, gerald ford was a deke at michigan (they tell everyone this fact)
Pregame partner: Delta Gamma

Alright I have to go to class, but I'll post more later, or if you have a question about a specific house, private message me.

I didn't join a house, but, in my opinion, theta and DKE guys are real chill and cool.

Alpha phi girls are without a doubt the hottest on campus.

alpha phi, tri delt, and kappa are all gorgeous

delta delta delta, can I help ya, help ya, help ya?

Interesting to catch up on the latest with Michigan's Greek scene. The fraternity hierarchy sure has shifted since my undergrad days at the ole' sorority house. Back then, the top houses primarily were Lambda Chi's, Psi U's, Phi Delt's, Figi's, Sigma Chi's...although I've heard a couple of those chapters may have been closed down. Sigma Phi's had one of the nicest houses, new and modern, but it's probably a dump by now...lol.

wow that was a lot different haha

Lamda Chi Alpha is now a relatively small house (20-30 guys), but their physical house is ridiculously nice inside.

Psi U is a medium sized house, and from what my friends in Psi U tell me, they have a really close brotherhood. They also party with hot sororities. Last year the pre partied with AXO.

Phi Delt was a top house until the 80s I believe when someone died after having consumed alcohol at one of their parties (not sure on the specifics). After that incedent, their nationals made the whole fraternity worldwide dry. Their guys are really cool and really nice, and their house, because they don't have parties, is ridiculously nice.

Fiji was top tier until the late 90s. They were the central party house on campus and essentially broke every rule. Brian Griese was a Fiji and is basically the reason why scholarship athletes at Michigan are not allowed to join the greek system.

Sigma Chi was kicked off four years ago because of hazing related violations and can start recruiting next year. They will get their house back the year after, and sigep will move to their newly built house (forest and hill).

Anyone have anything more on beta getting kicked off? The kid across the street (who is a very cool guy) from me is a pledge there and I know they've been getting in a little bit of trouble.

And by across the street I mean across the hall.

I am a recent sigep alum and sigep definitely has rush year round, since we don't have a "pledge" term. I'm not your typical "frat" boy and found the athletics and party side of sigep to be the the right balance for me.

Beta is not getting kicked off. They are in the process of being reviewed by both GARP (judiciary committee for Greek Life) and their Nationals. It will probably lead to some kind of probation (rush or social). They had a very good rush this year (I think around 27 pledges) and continue to thrive socially. Also, don't say that you hate certain fraternities, and Im assuming because you are a freshman that you just heard from either your friends or someone in your house that you are supposed to hate houses like beta and sae. Interfraternity hatred weakens the Greek system, which is always under scruitny and has a very negative public image as it is, substantially. Getting to know people and making friends in as many houses as possible, however, strengthens the Greek community. My house used to have several ongoing fueds, which we made a point of ending. Now we are on good terms with every house on campus.

Haha...H. was/is a Psi U and that's how it was back in the 80's as well. Our house partied with them regularly. ;)

Oh, that's right now that you mention it. It was the D. of George Cantor, the former Detroit News columnist...
"Cantor’s daughter made tragic national news in 1998 when she fell to her death from a U-M dorm room after she’d been drugged with GHB at a frat party; blood tests found she was not drunk. Since then, Cantor sued the university and others linked to the death."

I am a sophomore and planning on joining a frat like pike winter term. Any recommendations or pointers?
