So I was accepted via Early Decision this past weekend. Needless to say GW is my top choice and so I was thrilled. In my excitement I have started looking at the dorm buildings, trying to decide in which one I would like to live next year. What I am really looking for here is the opinions and perspectives of former GW freshman who have experience and can tell me more about the personalities that the various dorms tend to attract.

A little bit about me
-I don't drink, and while I do plan on starting a little in college I am more focused on studies than on getting wasted every chance I get.
-I love politics (certainly this is does not stick out at a school like GW, but it is one of my main passions), and will be attending the Columbian College with a major in Political Science, with plans for law school. I'm definitely a liberal, but I find I tend to place a good deal of emphasis on the importance of being moderate in times like these when bipartisanship is so rare yet valuable.
-During my free time, I'm usually hanging out with friends - whether that means watching tv, playing video games, or pulling off some kind of shenanigans.
-I would not describe myself as a shy person, but I am also pretty far from being a "bro" and am kind of uncomfortable around those kinds of people.

I am quite certain that Thurston is not the place for me. The Facebook GWU Class of 2015 group already has people talking about "Four Lokos Fridays" and the like, which is not really appealing to me just yet. However, I think that Potomac House is looking pretty good.

Also, if any other members of the Class of 2015 feel similarly, feel free to shoot me a PM if you want to become Facebook friends.

My Daughter lived in the honors dorm the first year. she had a place to study although even then she had to go to the library. then if she wanted to go party in Thurston or whatever she did. Her friend lived in potomac very nice dorm. this sounds like something you should look into. kind of a mix. (if you arent in the honors program)

Both my daughters have spent their Freshman year in Potomac, and both loved it. This year it was almost totally populated by EDers, since it was such a popular choice and they get first shot at dorms. The rooms are not large, but they are nice. It is convenient and the small suites are good.

I strongly recommend Madison. The rooms are larger than potomac plus the location is great (across the street from Gelman Library, so if you need to get there quickly to study you can. I usually just study in my room though as its always quiet. A lot of athletes live here so you don’t see partying a whole lot. The dorm is a good size so you really get to know your floor-mates.

I’m “channeling” this comment from my “S” who is in the class of 2014. Since your ED1 - you’ll have primary dorm choice selection. “Assuming” your interested in staying in Foggy Bottom - he said Potomac, then Madison. Of course if you don’t mind the Vern - West Hall is brand new and has singles.

My “S” went RD and is in Crawford - he’s not a partyer either and avoided Thurston. Even though old - he loves it so far - doubles, own bathroom. Very close to Marvin/Gelman. He wanted potomac, but was full with ED students!

this post scared me. as a mother of two sons at gwu, the thought of four loko parties is unbelievable. why is everyone so loco about four lokos? people need to learn how to find other things to do for fun. i was so angered by this post that i called my sons to ask them about this and they claimed that they’ve never seen anyone drink four lokos on campus. hopefully, this is just a joke.

ok first off, everything said on the 2015 fb group will never happen, people talk about how they will be the best freshmen class ever and they will party it up, and blah blah blah…trust me, that euphoria attitude wears off…anway, to answer your question, according to your info about yourself, i honestly think that living on the vern would be the best for you. thurston and potomac are synonymous, no matter what anyone says, they both involve drinking, but people do study there too, people have this persona of thurston being one 24 hr non stop party…coulnt be any more false!..the vern is the quietest place to live and has almost no parties that could be a distraction

i agree with academia…everyone says they are gonna be the craziest blah blah but it definitely wears off hahaha

yeah…if i were you, i’d choose the vern. and you can live on foggy bottom later…but maybe as a freshman it’d be best for you to live on the vern to get situated with everything

Judging from what you wrote, I think you would really like the vern. Everyone there is pretty tight-knit and hanging out isn’t all about parties (a lot of my friends on the vern do what you enjoy/list!). The rooms are actually pretty nice (I think they’re better than Thurston definitly). The only problem is probably the commute but you will get the hang of it by the end of first semester.

DON’T DO THE VERN. Just don’t. It doesn’t a difference what people say or whatever justification you give, it’s a pain. You chose GW knowing it was a city school, embrace the city. That being said, Madison sounds perfect for you. Then Crawford or Potomac. Potomac and Thurston are NOT synonymous, don’t let people tell you that. The rooms in Madison are huge and in Poto, they’re kind of small. Crawford is also great, two people to a bathroom and a marvelous location.

Oh I am sorry, just ignore everyone’s opinions on here. Clearly, only aidan1203 knows what he/she is talking about and everything she says is a fact. Only listen to her, forget everyone else’s opinions. Clearly, seniors, juniors, sophomores and even graduates, know less than everyone else. My apologies.

I too was accepted ED to GWU and am eagerly searching for the right dorm.
I’ve been seriously considering Potomac since I will enter the Elliot school school in the fall, but thanks for the Madison and Crawford suggestions !!

I live on the vern and I grew to love it. The only reason people think it is a pain is the commute, which if you go at the right times, is only 8-10 minutes. I wake up, go into the city, have classes, eat dinner, and go back to the Vern. It’s not a big deal unless you are impatient. The atmosphere is nice (there are still parties) but it is quieter and more of a campus feel. You really aren’t excluded from the city (there are embassies all around the campus, too.

I’m currently a freshman at GW, and I live in a double in Thurston. It’s a nice room - it’s much bigger than a Potomac double, has a huge closet, and a private bathroom (Potomac, and most other frosh dorms are shared with 4 people). Despite this, Thurston overall lives up to its reputation, and the hallway is always noisy until very late hours in the night, which might be a turn-off. Potomac is probably the best place for freshman overall - it’s in a nice location on campus, the rooms are very nice, and the floors are, in my opinion, the perfect size for meeting people. Crawford and Madison are much older and smaller, so people who I know in those dorms are much more attached to the people on their floor. Lafayette is a dorm under construction right now, but it will be available next year. It’s small, but the rooms should be very nice - they are supposed to be modeled after Potomac. Personally, I would avoid Mt. Vernon at all costs, regardless of whether you consider yourself to be a “partyer” or not. West Hall is brand-new this year and beautiful, but my friends who live there say it is especially unsocial. The other dorms on the Vern are also pretty nice, but extremely small, and are filled with people who, in my opinion, need to get out more. The campus is nice, but the shuttle bus is HORRIBLE - slow and unreliable, and I just don’t like the idea of being cut off from the city. I chose GW for a reason - and that was because I loved being in DC.

Just as a note, I assume, gudubstudent, that you meant that Madison and Crawford are smaller than potomac in the number of students. To clarify to everyone, the size of the rooms in Madison and Crawford are overall larger than in Potomac and most of the ones in Thurston.

liza, in Thurston, anything but double, because these are the smaller rooms, according to my sister who attends there. The best are the 6 people because they are huge.
