Which GPA is relevant?

When I met with my counselor, she said that when you apply, the school looks at your fall GPA and then you are supposed to maintain it through the spring.

So...for Fall 2011...

You apply Oct-Nov '10
You guess (???) what your GPA will be for that fall?
I mean, as long as we're guessing, cant I just guess what it will be after Ive finished all my classes Spring '11?
Im so confused.

you don’t guess. You just apply with the GPA you have accumulated through the 3 years of high school. I don’t know how your school runs, but when I submitted my Common App, it was after my first quarter. Therefore my GPA included Fresh, Soph, and Jr, and the quarter term of Sr. year.

Some schools make you send them Mid-Year reports which show your first semester grades. This is to see if you’ve been maintaining your grades. Some schools don’t ask for mid year grades but you can still send it to them if you think your progress is going to assist you in the admission process.

Once you have been accepted, you will have a conditional acceptance. They expect you to keep with your studies. This does not mean if you receive a B your offer will automatically be rescinded. It’s put in place so students still have to attend school and actually retain their grades. After you have graduated or after final grades have been released, your school will send the University you will attend, your final transcript showing all your grades through the 4 years of high school.

I am in community college. It seems strange that you have to go off of what youve already accumulated, when after spring semester, your grade may be significantly different.

Well then you would show what you’ve accumulated throughout your time at community college. I wouldn’t suggest guessing on something that holds significant weight in your app such as GPA, after all the schools do see the transcripts you send them, and would quickly notice any discrepancies in your application.

Most transfer applications aren’t due until after Freshman apps, and that’s usually after winter. By that time you would of have already finished your first semester, and could apply with the most up to date GPA. If you really want show your progress, you can send unofficial transcripts, along with grade reports demonstrating your grades through the Spring semester.

You’re right…thanks for the help!
