Which grade marks do you include in your boarding school application?

SPS and Deerfield mentioned including grade 6 marks. How many of you have actually included grade 6 marks? Also, do crappy grade 6 marks affect college admissions or should I just not include grade 6 & 7 marks?

To add on, in grades 6 and 7, I was at a new IB school. People didn’t like me cause I came out as bisexual and I was bullied a lot. If you know IB, in grade 6, I got a ton of 3s and 4s in English. If you don’t know IB, it’s out of 7. so 3/7 and 4/7 in english and math? Yeah, I know I was pretty bad. In grade 7, I was a little better, but still people hated me and treated me really horribly. In grade 8, my marks were awesome (4.0 GPA) and in grade 9, my marks were a little lower (3.6 GPA). Do you think if I explain why my marks were so bad, they will be more generous? Also, do boarding schools look at upward trends in marks?

I don’t think you have a choice in which grades are sent. Your current school sends your transcript directly to the school. The application packet generally includes a form for you to give your current school requesting they send the transcript. OTOH, grade 6 grades are likely included if you’re applying to grade 9, but may not be included if you’re applying to grade 11.

I agree-- unless you were at a different school for Grade 6 (which you were not), the grades will be included (I know they were for my DS-- he applied during 8th grade, and they sent the grades from Grade 6 through the first part of grade 8). I do think the BS admissions officers will appreciate the trend, but you’ll still be competing for slots against applicants who didn’t have the problem of low 6th Grade grades. Grades aren’t the only thing they consider, but they DO matter, so explaining the problem is a good idea. They will NOT matter for college: only 9th through 12th grade matter (and for those of you out there who hear rumors that you don’t have to report 9th Grade grades on college applications-- that’s NOT true). But no will will ever see your 6th grade marks again, once you’re into BS or high school. It’s true that, if you’re applying for grade 11, you’ll have many more recent marks (post-6th Grade), so those grades will matter less, but they’ll still get reported if they’re all from the same school. Of course, 11th grade is much harder to get into, and you don’t say if you’ll be applying as a junior or a repeat sophomore. Anyway, go ahead and apply-- you do have good grades since then–explain what happened, and keep your grades up this year.
