Which high ranking colleges have top notch theater programs?

Hi I would like to know which high ranking colleges have strong theater programs. I want to challenge myself in theater and in english literature as well, which is why I am looking at top colleges. I definitely would like to major in theater and english or theater and comparative literature. Please list any top colleges with top notch theater programs below?

Are you looking for BA programs or BFA programs?

High ranking colleges and strong theatre programs don’t necessarily correlate. It would be helpful to have a general idea of what you consider a ‘top college’ and a ‘top notch theater program’

Whose rankings are important to you? USNWR? What do you consider highly ranked? top 200, 100, 50, 20,10?

Are you looking for intensive daily preprofessional training in the classroom or mostly theatre studies supplemented by extracurricular theatre?

I would say Northwestern University (most performance-focused training among top-ranked universities), Yale (more theatre-studies focus for undergrads) and Brown might meet your criteria.

My son was looking for the same thing. If you are looking for a BFA or a BA that focuses on performing I would say Northwestern, USC, NYU, Michigan. Be sure to ask the colleges you are applying to if you can do a minor…in many you can’t. My son is a freshman at UM and will be getting a liberal arts minor. It did help that he had 26 AP credits so was able to bypass many required classes.

If you’re looking for an academically intense school and/or a BA programme, you can check out Vassar. I just sent in my ED I app - I plan on double-majoring in English lit and education, but I plan on being involved with theatre there as much as possible :)

Check out University of MIami. They are a top-40 school with BFA in Musical Theatre, and BFA Acting and BA in Theatre. Merit aid available, too. They are at Unifieds.

Be sure to clarify if you can actually complete your double major in 4 years. I know for certain that you can at Northwestern, but have heard it’s not possible at some (most) strong Theatre schools.

Definitely USC, where you can double major (BA). Can’t do anything else going BFA, though. Many schools have produced actors who were English majors (Chris Pine, Berkeley, Bradley Cooper, Georgetown). But in addition to doing some stuff in college, they studied at studios after university. UVa has produced its share of people in the business who majored in drama and/or something else.

Skidmore has a great BA Theater program – it allows you to take more theater credits than a regular BA, and they have a very strong study abroad program in theater as well.

One of the options for the study abroad program in theater at Skidmore is attending the Moscow Art Theater program.
